Started having some gum pain along one tooth. Swollen, and a little sore when chewing, nothing crazy.

Dentist said I need to do the root canal on the tooth because it has a big filling and started me on amoxicillin.

Pain and swelling started going away before I even took the first pill and was completely gone by this morning.

Can antibiotics work that fast? Do I really need it and if so, endo vs regular? Surprised she didn't refer me initially and wanted to do it herself.

Depends on the tooth. Some teeth are easy to do a root canal on, and a dentist can do it.

Dentist says you need a root canal. You should probably get one. I got one and had zero pain or issues prior to the root canal. Pain isn't the only reason to get a procedure done.

Get ready to spend a rediculous amount on getting it done.

I'd call your doctor back.

People on this board are a lot of things, but qualified to give you dental advice is not one of them. Unless they are a dentist, in which case they likely need to evaluate you.

YES. Emphatically yes. And DO NOT GO CHEAP.

Tooth pain is some of the worst in the world and if you put it off you’ll regret it eventually

never had meds before the procedure, always after. 1st one I needed it, second I didn't.

You will also need a crown so it takes two visits.

I am not a dentist, but I did stay at a holiday inn once.

You should buy some blow. You know, for just in case.

sounds to me like you had an infection and the amoxicillin worked to kill it. doesn't sound like you had any nerve problems that require a root canal.

but........if you have insurance.......you can bet your arse they will recommend one.

You could try the crown route.

Unbelievably bad advice. How do you think he got an infection there in the first place?

I should have mentioned it's a bottom molar and needs a crown.

I've been knowing for a while it probably needs to get done.

I guess at this point I'm more torn on letting the dentist do it vs the endo.

Endo has some tech called gentlewave that's supposed to be cutting edge.

Dentist estimated $1000ish after insurance. I think endo will be more. Honestly, money is not my priority. I want it done right.

Without actually doing an exam and seeing X-rays, its tough to diagnose.

But, if you had swelling around a tooth and the swelling and discomfort went away, AND assuming it was because of the tooth, then the following could have happened.

The tooth is dying/dead and the bacteria in the root canal system has caused a localized infection around the tooth. You got swelling and pain and were put on ABX. Now, at some point the infection can begin draining to another space or into the oral cavity and that will decrease the pressure in the area and swelling and pain can subside. This could be the reason that your symptoms went away after only being on the medication for a short time.

Patients will get on medication and symptoms go away and then forget about having anything fixed because they are no longer in pain. If you trust your dentist, go with their recommendation. If you don't, then find one you trust and get a second opinion.

If the tooth truly needs a root canal, then there is probably damage being done to the bone surrounding the tooth. If you don't want to have a root canal done, then an implant and crown is a perfectly fine option as well. But you don't want to let a bad tooth go on too long and eat away the bone, because then you run the risk of having a poor site for a potential implant.

That being said, root canals are very effective. Most literature has 5 year success rates over 90%.

Trust me, you do. Worst pain in my life resulted from a cheaply done root canal and the resulting infection years later

just because there's an infection, it doesn't mean that nerve needs to be removed fool.

you can get gum infections many many different ways.

I’m a dentist and I would advise any friend or family getting a molar rct done to have it done by an endodontist. Without questioning your dentists abilities I’ve see a lot of crap out there and they’re too easy to mess up

True, but any competent dentist can determine if the infection is from the tooth or the gums.

If the tooth is the source of the infection, then yes the nerve needs to be removed. Otherwise you are just letting a dead/dying canal system harbor bacteria.

I had a root canal done on a tooth. That tooth eventually abscessed and had to be removed and replaced with an implant. That tooth has cost me lots of money over time.

Most root canals? Speaking from any kind of experience?

To the OP--as long as the tooth is restorable afterward (not too much original tooth structure missing or fractured off) do the Root Canal and have it properly restored or crowned by your dentist afterward. Otherwise it may still fracture later.
