I’ve had my own mental health issues and still find myself being somewhat cynical in cases like Osaka and Biles. Then, something like this happens. I feel terrible for her friends and family.

The Olympic community is mourning the sudden death of New Zealand cyclist Olivia Podmore at 24 years old. The rider’s mental health is being looked at as a possible clue into her passing.
Podmore, who represented her country in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio and 2018 Commonwealth Games, was reported dead on Monday by multiple outlets. Cycling New Zealand confirmed the news of her death the following day on social media.

Sport New Zealand held a press conference on Tuesday that seemingly confirmed her death was related to mental health struggles.
"What I will say is that mental health is incredibly challenging," Sport NZ CEO Raelene Castle said, via The New Zealand Herald.
"I really wish that we could have a black and white and wrong and right answer for it. but it's not like that, even when you put the best level of support around that athlete with an open door into psychological services, and offer all those opportunities," Castle said. "Sometimes they reach out. Olivia had been reaching out into those environments. Why are we here? That's the question we all want the answer to."

You just can’t make any assumptions when someone is struggling mentally.
Only the shittiest or most ignorant among us make fun of people who say or prove that they are struggling with depression and/or anxiety.

RIP. Unfortunately people with real mental illness can't get treated, and in today's world, we celebrate it way more than treat it.

I’m on prescription meds for mental issues. Unfortunately there’s too many people who use this as an excuse or cry wolf and screw it up for the people that really do suffer. That’s why there is skepticism these days.

Not to be overly blunt, because mental health is real and serious.
But, I think it's safe to say that anyone who commits suicide was suffering from mental health problems.

You ignored a lot of the facts in this thread to make a shitty joke.
You got the country, gender and sport wrong.

In most cases...there are some less common examples of people killing themselves from severe physical pain

Try to catch that thing going over your head.

I'm glad pills work for you.

Oh... wow... you're doubling down on a lame joke in a thread about someone committing suicide.
Bold strategy, Cotton.

That’s the real kicker. I’ve cycled through 10-15 different anti-depressants in the last 30 years. Prozac is the only one that’s ever given me any positive results, and those results are much less than what I would like. The others either didn’t do anything or had negative side effects. I haven’t had any major episodes in more than 15 years, and for that I’m extremely grateful.

When it comes to Biles, it seems like the word mental was substituted a lot for cognitive.
“I lose track of where I am in the air and can’t track where I am going to land” is a lot more serious than Osaka basically saying she hates talking to the press.

Broski!
You’re gonna use political correctness as a comeback? Take it to Twitter.

And you're doing exactly what this woman intended. Wallowing in her self pity.

No I'm using your terrible lack of humor as a comeback.
I'm all for funny jokes at the expense of PC culture, but yours was not clever or funny at all. I'm not even sure it was a joke.

RIP.
Mental illness in all facets of life is still ignored to a large degree when not being celebrated for the extremes which often still end up with the same result.
May her family and loved ones find peace
