Underrated: No. 13 LSU
Can we stop with the narrative that LSU is a hot mess destined for a disaster in 2021? That simply won't be the case. Coach Ed Orgeron told me at SEC Media Days that he didn't handle the pressure of defending a national championship well at all. He's right. To fix things, he canned defensive coordinator Bo Pelini in favor of Daronte Jones, and replaced Steve Ensminger with Jake Peetz, who Orgeron says will incorporate five-man protection schemes almost exclusively. That's exactly what Joe Brady did during the 2019 national title run. Max Johnson is a more than a willing runner at quarterback, just like Joe Burrow. The running back room is loaded. Wide receiver Kayshon Boutte is one of the best receivers in the country and the Tigers return four starters up front. The defense has nine starters back, including star defensive back Derek Stingley, Jr., defensive linemen Ali Gaye and Glen Logan, and -- most importantly -- the absence of Pelini. LSU is Alabama's primary threat, and it isn't even close.

I like it. There was so much garbage going into the 2020 season I never had any real optimism. There is a different vibe from players and coaches this season. I'm cautiously optimistic, but I really think this team can make a serious push this season.

That is a blessing. I love coming in around 13-20. Makes the team hungrier.

Perhaps, but there are few examples of teams starting outside the top-10 and winning the championship. Since 2002, there were only four:

2013 Florida state, ranked 12th
2010 Auburn, ranked 23rd
2003 LSU, ranked 15th
2002 Ohio State, ranked 12th

Don't disagree with the analysis BUT:
We are thin on offense ( and weak at tight end) and a major injury at QB, OL, TE or Boutte would create problems that we might not be able to overcome.
Defense should be strong.

great, but irrelevant. Win the West and get to Atlanta, that's all that really matters.

this is absolutely correct, actually starting mid-October with the 3 game stretch of Florida, at Ole Miss, at Alabama. Final game against A&M too.

Yep. And outside of 2003, almost every other great year for LSU (ex: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2019) LSU started the season ranked in the top 10.

I don't think the rankings provide any extra motivation. But I do think conditions are favorable for a really good season. While not 100% accurate, one of the best indicators of success going into a season is returning production. To that end, LSU is returning quite a bit...just like they did in 2019. Plus, this is the 3rd recruiting class in a row that was ranked in the top 10. Since 1996 all but one team that has won the NC had at least two top 10 classes in the prior four years. Finally, the odd year schedules seem to favor LSU (03, 05, 07, 11, 19). The biggest reason is 3 of the usual four toughest opponents (Auburn, Florida, Alabama, A&M) are HOME games for LSU. And in the one road game, Alabama, LSU has favored much better THERE than at Tiger Stadium (1-5 vs. Bama at home since 2010; 2-3 vs. Bama on the road since 2010)

There were PLENTY of reasons to be bullish on LSU going into 2019...and it proved right. There were many reasons to go the opposite direction last season (though we tried to ignore them). Unfortunately, that proved right as well. The pendulum has shifted again back to the favorable direction

It matters not in early August who is rated where. It matters where you are ranked once the CFP committee releases its first poll in October.

LSU just needs to win its games, week by week, and rankings will take care of themselves. UCLA is our most important game.

Surprising to see Sallee as the writer of this article. He is typically not that friendly towards LSU. Good take though.

13 is right where I think we are. We have a lot of talent, but with two new coordinators anything can happen. I still think it's going to be us and Bama in the West.

As obvious as this was to everyone who was watching, it's still tough to read. Yes, there was unprecedented attrition, covid, and some bad luck for sure. But there was also an air of complacency. Hopefully the hunger is back this year.

You do know that means it happens 20% of the time right?

Based on last year and the unknowns, I'd say #13 is about fair. Everyone we need to beat is in front of us. I like our spot. I think we are going to be really, really good, but I have no problem starting at #13.

Also, this is sure to rustle some jimmies on the SECr

Yeah I already posted it over there along with this:

quote:

Overrated: No. 6 Texas A&M
Look, I get it. Texas A&M was in the College Football Playoff mix all the way up to the final release of the rankings last winter. That has given Aggie fans around the country a false sense of hope that this is the year they break through the glass ceiling and make the CFP. That isn't going to happen. The No. 6 ranking ignores that coach Jimbo Fisher is breaking in a new quarterback -- Haynes King or Zach Calzada -- who hasn't taken a single meaningful snap in FBS football. That matters, especially in a system that demands a lot from its signal-caller. What's more, the Aggies are breaking in four new starters on the offensive line. Granted, the one returning starter, All-American left tackle Kenyon Green, is a monster, but he's only one man. This unit will be charged with not only protecting the quarterback, but making critical checks at the line of scrimmage in order to protect said quarterback. The coaches seem to think that the Aggies are the top contender to Alabama in the SEC West. I disagree (more on that below).

Why does it always have to be us? It's like the whole college football world waits until November to see if LSU can dethrone Alabama every season.
