PET Scan Injection

A half hour or so after my injection of FDG (fluorodeoxyglucose) before my PET Scan a person came in the room and checked me with a Geiger Counter. I know the FDG is a radioactive substance.
I’ve been having PET Scans pretty regular since 2015, never had that happen.
Caught me off guard. Could they be checking to see if I was ready then instead of waiting the usual hour?

You know who would’ve been a great person to ask?

The person with the fricking Geiger counter.

Yes, the isotope has a short life, waiting too long can be a problem also.

They were scanning the Bill Gates chips that were put into your system. You are all programmed now.

It might be to document your radiation dose for future potential testing. They should be keeping track of how much radiation you’ve received within a given amount of time. If another test is ordered it could potentially alert the provider that you’ve already gotten the maximum amount of radiation deemed appropriate for that amount of time and a different test may have to be ordered. Not sure but I do know some places monitor how much radiation patients receive.

It's pretty common. They want to dose you enough to ensure an adequate scan.

Too little the scan is not as accurate.

Too much, your dick will turn inside out and you become a Trans. It will glow in the dark however.

They did that to me when I had inpatient chemo.

Did the chest x ray, CT chest, abdomen, head, neck drank the barium for one, and PET I believe that injected me with the stuff that had in a metal cup. I sat there an hour for it to I guess get through my body.

Part of the test involves the different tissues having different absorption rates. Muscle vs liver vs kidneys vs thyroid, etc.. In addition different "abnormal" conditions can effect the absorption rates so the Geiger counter could be checking something to do with expectations in that regard.

As far dosage of radiation received per study over time...

Every Radiology Report on EVERY procedure nowadays must include the patient dose. It's on every study done encoded but plainly readable if you ever get a copy or have access to your studies. Its usually top corner of the 1st image. A lot of times for multiple repeat patients the Radiologist will include a summation like: 36th study in last 3 months including CT, PET, XR, Specials, total dosage received ___ rads.

Trust your Radiologist, there's a reason they get paid the big bucks (and a reason your specialist refers and defers to the Rad).

Right. When I was nearing the end of my radiation treatment, I asked one of the techs what my daily dose was. He immediately pulled my chart and told me 4500 Grays, microGrays or some unit of measurement I'd never heard of. I was hoping for an answer in Rads. Oh, well...
