First two hours of MTV broadcast
Best comment was " They played more music during those two hours than they have the past 10 years."
I watched MTV more than anything else all through the 80s. Then they started the "Real World " ,or whatever it was called , and I couldn't stand watching a bunch of whiny losers sit around and complain all the time.

It's gone to shite after they figured out how cheap "reality" programming is and dropped most music videos in the early 00s. At least Beavis & Butthead was a music centric show.

The biggest contributor with MTV's decline was the corporate syngergy with fellow Viacom channel Nickelodeon to market directly to Tween Girls.
Became less about the music and more about which boy band member had the best frosted tips.
Also, cheap, mass produced reality TV shows. Its transition into the Ridiculousness Network is really something.

I also watched MTV in the 80s when it was nothing but Music Videos. Had a thing for Martha Quinn. I miss what MTV used to be.

Then it became about politics. Appealing to Millennials. In truth, MTV has been dead a long time.

I think some licensing royalties may have also contributed to the musical demise.

Top 20 video countdown everyday after school. It used to be a cool channel

Reality TV killed the radio star

Really from the late 90s to mid 2000s VH1 was substantially better than MTV

Some of the first non-music programming they had was ok, like the “Remote Control” game show (earliest Adam Sandler I remember). But the further away from music they got, the worse they got.
I don’t remember watching MTV at all after 1988.

Also, outside of the music videos, one of my favorite things to watch on MTV was Liquid Television

And in honor of their 40th anniversary, here is what they are showing today:
