From an external perspective for people who don’t live there it seems stupid but a quick Google of Hope Memorial Bridge shows the ties with the name.

What a truly awful logo.
I'm about to sound like a grandpa but logos just don't look as good when they were created by graphic design. Nothing beats the detail of the logos that you can tell were originally hand drawn.

Not a huge fan of the name but could be worse. They didn’t go full retard and call them the Cleveland Indian Removal Act Non-Supporters or anything like that

Spiders would have been the only thing, to me, that would have made this whole thing not fricking ridiculous. Spiders is a cool name, Guardians seems like a made up team in a generic video game

I'm in an artistic/creative field. You're absolutely correct. Everything is drawn in vector programs now so that leads to simplistic but scalable and easily manufactured designs. And cheaper.
A prime example is the old seminoles logo and the new one. The old one just had character. The new one is so stale.
Same with LSU's tiger head. The old one was asymmetric and just a great logo. The new one is too clean. Much like new stadiums are pretty to look at but they just don't have the atmosphere and charm.
