Do they still fix electronics outside of phones? Haven’t seen a small electronics repair shop for a good decade and a half now.
My guess is that they get thrown in the trash or manufacturers have refurbishing depots where a tech might find employment. Seems cheaper for them to just make new on most things now.

And no, no one in the WHOLE WORLD is "a" electronics technician or be doing somethings with electronics. You have to figure it out yourself.

They are definitely still around...I don't see many people get into it as much anymore. Just old farts

Availability of information on the internet hurt them as well. Almost any small electronic repair instructions can be found in a youtube video or on a forum.

You may want to look at controls type field.

I think most “electronics technicians” get into automation or communications

Do you mean I/E technician that works in plants?
It’s a good job with good income & stability.
You won’t be rich but you won’t be struggling.
You will probably have to be on call every 6-8 weeks.

It’s definitely still a needed skill set. It’s not a well known job. But you can make a pretty good living repairing medical equipment if you have a degree like that.

Solid answer. I assume OP is looking at trade school options. Definitely go the controls route. Instrumentation, automation, process control, etc.
It's a good field if you find the right employer.

Instrument techs make good money and you're not pulling chains to open valves.

I am on a laptop on TD and looking at charts, on a phone looking at mail, and watching TV.
Hop this helps.

There is definitely a demand for qualified et’s. Automation and controls are here to stay. Everything will be run by logic and programming. Automation has and will take jobs but there’s always a need for the person that’s able to work on the automation.

I’ve done controls and automation work in just about every aspect for the past 27 years. It’s worth getting into and you can make a fine living. If your planning on making decent money you need to be better than the average bear. As with anything there are tiers and if you are a top tier technician, you can do very well financially.
My user name Eitek1 stands for “Electronics and Instrumentation Technician #1”. I created the name at the beginning of my career with the expectation I was going to put in the work to be a top tier technician. That mindset and my ambition has served me very well. I can do electrical work up to medium voltage, PLC’s, DCS, Turbine controls, all aspects of process controls and so on. Be prepared for a career spent learning perpetually.
If your one of the top tier folks and you’re willing to put in the work, you can make six figures all day long.
If you aren’t scared to put a radio in your own car, you likely have the skills to do this kind of stuff.

I sent a DSLR for shutter repair and the company had a web cam in the tech area. Probably 5-8 folks working on small electronics. United Camera. Not sure what kind of pay it is. Def not as good as plant work ET.
