Washington’s president Jason Wright said in a release on the team’s website that the new name will not feature anything related to Native Americans. Wright said the new name should bring in more people to support the team and that the new name shouldn’t be offensive to anyone.

quote:

With this in mind, we made it a priority to run an inclusive process to listen to all voices. We have given particular emphasis to engaging, listening and learning from Native American leaders and individuals throughout the country," Wright said. "This process has exposed to us the very deeply-held personal feelings about our previous imagery and association – and not just the simple, easy-to-categorize ‘who's for or who's against’ polling of our old name, but research revealing the psychological effects of Native American team names on American Indian and Alaska Native youth.

quote:

In sum, this engagement demonstrated to us a consensus that moving forward with no ties to Native American imagery is the right path. I am personally and deeply grateful for the Native American community leaders who engaged with us, sharing painful, raw and real stories that persist to this day. Their stories affirmed our decision to move in a new direction in the creation of our new name and identity, and we are proudly forging ahead in this journey with a promise to our community – a promise to continue to be inclusive in our process and collaborative with our fans."

Wright added the team is not considering the term "Warriors" as a possible nickname replacement.

Your move, Golden State.

What if you include a Rainbow in front of the warriors? Seems pretty inclusive to me

Well that will narrow the options down quickly. Even the American flag is considered offensive these days.

They should name themselves the Washington Sentinels, unveil retro jerseys resembling the ones from “The Replacements”, and retire Shane Falco’s jersey at the first home game with Keanu Reeves performing the ceremonial coin toss and some of the other stars of the movie there as guest captains.

Just pretend the Replacement team was some landmark squad that really existed. Chant “Ole” during field goal attempts, do tongue n cheek mockumentary about Shane “the Leg” with a bunch of real life sportscasters. Just embrace the joke as much as possible

Washington Deadskins and retool the Indian mascot into a zombie. Player spooky organ music at games and Dan Snyder can dress like the pallbearer that used to follow around the Undertaker. Every time these is a tragedy with a loss of life he can go out there and say things like “so sorrrrrry parents of [insert high school where shooting happened], it looks like your children won’t cheer for [insert closest pro team], but have instead gone to join our legion of fans…beyond…the…graaaave”

Problem solved. I can’t imagine anyone being opposed to this

The original Senators all were slave owners. That seems problematic

The opposite will happen. I promise more people who support Washington have been turned off to the team because of the name change than new fans who were holding off their fandom because of the name.

They could name the team the Washington Double Stuffed Golden Oreos and people would be offended

I always like the Washington Washingtons. Have the logo basically be the pose that dude is making on the one dollar bill or the quarter

But that can’t happen due to also carrying offensive connotations. Also it’s redundant

I'm guessing it will be Redwolves or Redhawks or Redhogs or something that starts with an R. The "HTTR" ("Hail to the Redskins") slogan is a big deal to them and it'll have to be something similar.

I’m not gonna lie, a zombie themed sports franchise is pretty cool out of the box thinking.
