I'm looking to purchase a 12 gauge - is the M4 worth the extra $1k for, primarily, a home defense shotgun? I already have a Remington 1100 (20) and a Browning A5 (16) for hunting. I'm a little cautious about purchasing another semi-auto shotgun, so I'm inclined to go with the 870, but I really like the rail system on the M4. Anyone with experience with these?

Wait for a gun show in your area. Can maybe get an old Remington police issue a pump 12 gauge that holds like 9 for $400

Got one at a gun show in my area that was an old police issue and I paid $350 for it. Holds 9 and it’s a beast.

Kinda looking at two opposite ends of the spectrum here. I do not have an M4. I have shot a 1301 comp a bunch (kinda similar) and for home defense I like the semi auto better. I am as comfortable with an 870 as anyone but I have short shucked it before.

You just need to decide if you want top of the line or plenty good enough.

Get the pump! You just rack it and the bad guys run away!

Any 870 made within the last 15-20 years is a piece of crap.
It will rust sitting in a vat of cosmoline

I have an M4 (actually the m1014). I added a tube extension, a Taran tactical feed ramp and oversized bolt release and also a new oversized bolt knob.

That gun is a beast. Not sure that it isn’t my favorite gun right now.

ETA, it’s a little more than a $1000 extra btw.

Like $1750 extra.

If you are not on a budget, get the M4. If for no other reason than it being bad arse. The 870 will stop someone just as easily, though.

False

12 gauge from 2002 doesn’t have a lick of rust and has been through the ringer.

Got a 20 gauge “for the Mrs” in 2017 and has been out in the weather/swamp a bunch. Still no rust.

I may be lucky

Great option and not nearly as costly as the M4. I’ve had a Super Nova for several years and used it for duck, squirrel, skeet and it will definitely work for home defense.

Good luck to OP.

Whichever you decide on, get some of these for home defense.

Why do you think the company failed in the biggest gun buying stretch in American history?

Think it was their quality products?

The last 20yrs it put out crap whether you want to admit it or not.

But I also claimed I may be lucky

I don’t know anybody personally that has any problems, besides a handful of lower end rifles not ejecting/feeding properly.

My .270 “Walmart special” 700 is from 2004, killed more deer than I care to remember. Swapped out the combo bushnell 3-9x40 just last season.

My nephew has one that rusted in an a/c closest in my house after a few weeks. Covered it in oil.

I was shocked.

I actually bought 3 700s last year (walmart was moving them for cheap , got them for $200 each). Have only messed with one so far. Sent it off to be blueprinted and timed. Got it back and built my son a rifle with it.
It's amazing now.

The other 2 have been ok about rusting but still want to send them off to be blueprinted and timed.
The barrel that came off my sons gun was terribly rusted and it was brand new. It was eye opening.

True that. I got my little youth one in like 98 or 99 and its been underwater a few times, been a boat paddle, dropped in a frozen lake and proceeded to freeze solid in the barrel and chamber and shot immediately once it thawed out in the sun and never rusted. Look for an old 870, but get the magnum.

I have the nova and find it to be a tad heavy , for home defense I use buckshot in my Remington wingmaster .

Bought a 12 gauge 870 in 2018. Used it for two seasons hunting Biloxi marsh before I won an a300 in a raffle. Gun would rust between leaving the marsh and getting home. Had to immediately break it down and clean it when you got home. Oiling it up the night before wouldn’t even help it.
