Do You Call What You Do in the Gym "Training"?

I know this has nothing to do with Health/Fitness, and is more of an OT topic, but it just rubs me the wrong way when someone, who isn't training for an actual competition (lifting competition, fitness competition, a race, etc.) says they train instead of saying they workout or lift weights or whatever..

In a thread on the OT, that Coyote weirdo commented that he wakes up at whatever time in the morning to "train". I, being the type of person I am, commented that people that refer to working out as "training" come off as insufferable douches. Then Mingo chimed in with an unwarranted insult about my workouts, which makes me believe he also calls working out "training" (which would make sense to me because he, quite often, seems like an insufferable douche.

So The question is in the title. Do you call whatever it is that you do in the gym (or garage for some) training, or do you just say you are working out or lifting weights or exercising?

Exercising. Unless there is money or a trophy involved you’re just exercising.

Why are you so butthurt that people train for stuff?

Triathlons, marathons, Olympic lifting, powerlifting, cycling, etc, etc.

Sorry you don't do anything of value with your "training" time

yes because I'm almost always "training" for something specific, either a race, a specific workout/movement, or competition

I personally do not call it 'training', but I don't have any problem with it either. Technically, you are training in the sense that you're practicing specific movement patterns that recruit certain muscle groups and trying to get better at it every day.

Can you read? I was referring to people who are not training for an event, yet still call it training. You're about as dumb as you are douchey.

So if I go play a round of golf, that is considered training, as well?

It's just such a weird thing to be peeved over

you can "train" specific muscles/movements without doing it for an event

I'm going to have to disagree with this. Unless you are trying to make a team, or tour, you're just playing golf. Same thing for lifting weights.

Then that's what you should have said, but it isn't.

That doesn't make it any less pussy to make a thread whining about it, none the less

so if you are doing something, anything, with the objective to get better at it, you don't consider that to be training?

if you are just playing a round with the boys, then sure, I agree with you

I presented a question, and explained my reasoning for asking the question.

How do you not comprehend the question. Does anyone else not see how dumb this dude is?!?

Neither one of those is a team or tour, it's a single competition. And playing golf isnt training, but going to the range with an alignment stick and towel to go under your arm is absolutely training.

I actually was thinking about this a few days ago. I’m trying to switch to a “training” mentality rather than saying I’m working out. Working out has been for general health but mostly thinking about “looking good.” But I’m hitting my late 30s and don’t eat perfectly and have no desire to bulk/cut, so aesthetics can be secondary.

I do enjoy racing and competing in events. My workout program (5/3/1) is designed for strength AND conditioning with the goal of being a competitive athlete. So yes, I should say I’m training.

I would just call it working out because I think it's more accurate.

Training does sound a little cringe sometimes, but not a big enough deal to call anyone out on it...

Do you golf 3-5x a week and try to lose a stroke every day?
