Pet-peeve of mine. Just because you’re stacking a gram of test and d-bol and perform quarter squats on the smith machine, it does not mean you’re “training” for anything.

I do powerlifting and I am currently training for my 3rd meet. I got two medals so far, hopefully I get a third but the weight class is kinda stacked.

A benefit of my training is that I get to workout and get stronger at the same time.

I do not personally. But I have about a dozen friends who do play about 3-5 times a week. And none of them are tying to shoot the same score as the day before; they are trying to shoot lower. None of them consider that to be training. That's just playing golf. Hell, they would laugh someone out of the club house if they were to call it "training".

Bonkers, what you are doing IS training. But someone who goes to the gym with the sole purpose to stay in shape, get stronger, or just be healthier in general, is not training. There is no event they are working toward.

If someone is trying to get better for a formal competition, and they refer to what they are doing as training, I have no issue with that.

I do not call it training. But if someone else did; other than the awkward conversation of me asking "what are you training for" because I misinterpreted what the person meant, I would think nothing of it.

doesnt have to be a formal competition. Its pretty simple distinction really

exercise/workout- no specific plan or goal, randomly done exercises to "get/stay in shape"

training- following a specific plan/periodization/progression to reach a specific goal one has. I.E. following 531 to achiece a specific goal of benching 405 would be strength trianing.

but in the end why the frick do you care? Are you one of those douche bags that correct fans when they say "we lost or we won" because technically they arent part of the team?

you sound like an overbearing douche...just saying.

In the army exercising is called physical training so I never thought anything of it although I anticipate OP will point out that PT is training for something specific (in theory).

I really don't "care". People can say whatever they want. That doesn't mean I won't poke fun at them for it.

If a friend of mine, who I know isn't training for some sort of competition, tells me how they had a good training session this morning, I will, without hesitation, make a joke about them "training".

For the record, anytime in my life, when I've been called a douche, no one has ever said "nah, hes not a douche at all!"

Everyone is a douche in one way or another....

Well...this is your way.

I guess Mark Rippetoe, Jim wendler, Aaron Ausmus and host of other famous coaches are dumb for calling it "strength training"

Oh wait....that's the name strength training, not strength exercising, not strength working out....it's actually called strength training

I'm not talking about fitness professionals. I'm referring to the average Joe.
