I recently spent time in both. They have some redeeming qualities. I saw the the sights and heard the sounds of Broadway and Beale.

You also have some nice counters with each:

Blues vs Country
NBA Grizzlies v NHL Predators
Each has a Triple A team
Titans spent time in both cities
Each has a lower level bowl game
Mississippi River / Cumberland River
Neither has a flagship university, but each has a big school

Similar in population, and the next largest is pretty distant.

As an outsider, I am curious if there is a constant pissing contest between residents of the two.

Interested in your criteria for “flagship university” and how Vandy isn’t included in that definition.

I think at one time there may have been a little "friendly" rivalry.

But not any more.

I live in Memphis and people here acknowledge the only thing better about living here versus Nashville is cost of living. Work and family ties are the main reasons anyone lives here, most affluent young people leave once they become adults.

There are three states in Tennessee west middle and east and they obviously get progressively better the further you go east

Memphis might suck but its still better than Jackson and I'd rather live in Memphis than other cities I've lived in like Los Angeles, Seattle, and San Diego.

Less like a rivalry and more like a resentment. Memphis plays 3rd fiddle to Nashville and the Smokies.

Used to be. Memphis has FedEx, Autozone, International Paper, and a few other big employers. It had major potential but they made a lot of the wrong moves 20-30 years ago.

Nashville has since surpassed Memphis and is probably going to rival Atlanta in a decade or so.

I lived in Collierville for 4 years and loved it. Memphis has some serious problems, but there's no shortage of friendly people there. Awesome zoo too.

If it is, it's not a very competitive one.

They hand always hated each other. Instead of a north vs South rivalry Tennessee has a west vs East thing

The only rivalry I could imagine is which of these two cities have the lamest skyline.

Both just slightly more impressive than Baton Rouge's
