Can someone please explain “Ranked Choice Voting”?

As a lot of you know, I’m in NY and the Hulu political ads lately have been championing “Ranked Choice Voting” where you rank 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. choices… they explain that “If your first selection doesn’t win, it’ll slide to your 2nd pick…” and I can’t wrap my head around how that works or is beneficial to the democratic process…
Can anyone explain it in the simplest of terms?
shite doesn’t make any fricking sense to me at all…

So you don't have to vote for the lesser of two evils.
Imagine having to choose between and SJW and a RINO swamp rat.

It means that no matter who you voted for..
you probably voted Democrat.
Congratulations.

Right, but if the candidate I choose #1 doesn’t win, that means someone else won… so how/why would it slide to the next candidate?

How ranked-choice voting works
Broadly speaking, the ranked-choice voting process unfolds as follows for single-winner elections:
Voters rank the candidates for a given office by preference on their ballots.
If a candidate wins an outright majority of first-preference votes (i.e., 50 percent plus one), he or she will be declared the winner.
If, on the other hand, no candidates win an outright majority of first-preference votes, the candidate with the fewest first-preference votes is eliminated.
All first-preference votes for the failed candidate are eliminated, lifting the second-preference choices indicated on those ballots.
A new tally is conducted to determine whether any candidate has won an outright majority of the adjusted voters.
The process is repeated until a candidate wins a majority of votes cast.

Basically, to “win”, you need a 50%+1 vote and if a candidate doesn’t get to that, it trickles on down the line

It's an instant runoff. Like a Louisiana election except you don't have to go back and vote again.

Saves money by avoiding runoffs

If none one gets 50% then whoever finished last is removed and the votes are calculated to see if someone crossed 50%. If after they they are not then the person who is last is removed and votes recalculated to get a majority.
Essentially it would be easier just to say if this person has 46% and this one 40% another 10% and last 4% the 46% person is the winner. Than removing the 4% and re-calculating

Ranked Choice is just another scam to get more Democrats in office.
Posted on 6/13/21 at 12:21 pm to DesScorp
So for example we had Clinton, Bush, and Perot and no one for 50%.
So it looks like since Perot was last they throw his votes out and count his voters 2nd choice to determine the winner between Bush and Clinton.

I actually very much disagree. It helps smaller parties garner support because you don't "waste you vote" voting for a libertarian or communist.
The establishment is strongly against ranked choice voting.

A bit more.
Let's say you ranked Perot first and Bush 2nd. When Perot gets eliminated they recount the votes BUT everyone that put Perot first would not have their 2nd choice counted. In this case it would be Bush.
For presidential elections it would to be on a state by state basis since the president.
For local regular primary followed by a runoff election it is a little more straight forward.
The benefits of the system:
1. You don't need to pick the lesser of two evils. Vote for who you really want and then rank the lessor choices lower.
2. Eliminates runoffs.
In theory it makes a lot of sense. I am inherently conservative so I would want to see how this is done in some other states first before adopting it in Louisiana.

Right, and since we won't ever know we have to guess. My guess is that Perot's voters were closer to Bush in policy than Clinton, and that Bush would have won.

It's how Democrats cheat
Republican gets 48%
Democrat gets 44%
Democrat gets 6%
That 6% is given to the 44% Democrat because that would have been those voters' second choice and they win with 50% of the vote.
It's how the dems stole a house seat in Maine in 2018.
Republican gets 48%
Democrat gets 44%
Democrat gets 6%
That 6% is given to the 44% Democrat because that would have been those voters' second choice and they win with 50% of the vote.

It completely violates the principle of one man one vote.
I hate it as an idea.

Can you vote for your first choice for all choices?

In that case you would just put in your first choice and nobody else. If your first choice got eliminated in round 1, your round 2 vote would go to nobody.

There's a tech website called Slashdot that's been pushing it for years. If slashdot is for it, I'm against it.
