I have some distant relatives that live in rural Colorado. None of them are fat but a couple are methheads.

I live on the coast in NE Florida, in a nice area. Not too many lard asses around, don’t get me wrong there are some. But when I go see family in NW Georgia and eastern Tennessee, god almighty they out number the fit folks!

All you have to do is look at Shanqueesha's cart(s) at Sam's.
They are piled high with chips, cookies, candy, cokes, and every colorful sugar water drink that exists for kids.
People eat like absolute shite.
What is most shocking to me is the kids. Seeing mordbily obese kids under 10 is just depressing.

I agree about the food choice, but I find the biggest culprit is lack of exercise and/or physical activity.
The fact that people are so comfortable staying locked up in the pandemic is evidence of this. They have no problem being big fat bullfrogs perched up on their couch all day 24/7. That feels "safe" to them. That tells you everything you need to know. These same people were all about shutting down gyms and anything involving exercise.
That is the difference between people now and people in the past.

I was wondering when there was going to be another thread about overweight people. Guess I’m different and less judgmental than 99.9% of the posters of the OT because I don’t dislike overweight people, don’t judge them nor do I feel the need to constantly fat shame like the majority of posters. I guess I’m too busy trying to take care of myself than worrying about someone else’s lifestyle and eating habits.

It ain’t just black folks. My Mom’s family is from rural east Alabama and every single one of them is obese.

What often goes unsaid is the BMI way of determining obesity leaves a lot to be desired. By their measurements I was borderline obese when I was in the military. I have high single digits body fat % at the time. I was by my height (6-2) borderline obese at 245 but it was over 90% muscle.

Worrying about someone else’s lifestyle is showing that you care for them. Would you say something or do something if one of your children was obese? Of course you would because you love them and want to help them. Why wouldn’t you do the same for strangers?
Sitting back and watching people eat themselves to death without comment or action is inhumane and cruel.

Unfortunately you’re wrong. I’m 5’9’”, weigh 140 and have a 29-30 waist. I eat a healthy diet and exercise as much as I can. I just don’t see the need to constantly bash certain groups of people but, that’s just me.

Yes, I would say something to my daughter if she were obese but, I’m not going to walk up to a total stranger, especially in this day and age, and tell them they are overweight and need to change their lifestyle and lose weight or die.

You are certainly right about BMI being an imperfect measurement, though most people I hear complain about BMI scale are not muscular but are chubby and have a distorted sense of what healthy weight truly is.
