1. Someone tactically more astute than me can probably answer this: what was wrong with Dest? And was a subbing off necessary or could we have changed tactics earlier?

2. Should Pefok start at striker now? He’s a proper 9 who actually holds the ball up and tries to bring others into play.

3. How do we best utilize Tim Weah’s clear ability and talent?

4. More of a statement than a question: holy shite Tim Ream needs to be taken out to the pasture.

McKenzie has been waaayyyy more of a liability than Tim Ream. If he’s our 2nd best CB then holy shite.

McKenzie was atrocious.

1. I thought we started playing better once he came off and we changed back to the standard 4-3-3 we’ve been running. Dest just looked out of it all night. He wasn’t trying to take anyone on and his first touch was arse. I liked the sub.

2. If we want to effectively press teams in the opposing third he can’t be the starter. He’s just way too slow. The role he has right now seems good. Come in around the 75th when things get sloppy and hopefully poach a goal.

3. No idea but he needs more minutes than Gregg has been giving him. Honestly wouldn’t mind giving him a shot at the 9 if Sargent continues to struggle putting away chances.

4. Yes. Like yesterday.

I'm failing to remember any attempts where he should have scored. He had the one attempt where he fell down but at that angle it would have had to be perfect anyway.

Haven't watched a ton of McKenzie at Genk, but honestly he did not look better than Miazga, Richards, or even someone like CCV. For sure not better than a healthy Long. If this was his chance to stake a claim at the other CB next to Brooks he blew it.

He had a chance to score after a save from a shot by McKennie, but that was a poor attempt as well.

But even on the attempt where he slipped, if he could have hit it far post, we had someone crashing in case there was a rebound.

CBS player ranking of Ream

3
A surprise inclusion to the starting XI and did nothing to warrant another start. Was drawn out and beaten time and time again. Played 82 minutes more than he should have.

Ream was set up to fail. We were in a 4-4-2 and he was at LB. The lineup might have said 3-4-3 but Dest was nowhere to be found on defense leaving Ream to cover the left side by himself. We all know he can't do that.

Dest left Ream out to dry so our 3-4-3 became a 4-4-2, which causes a lot of problems for Ream. There were a lot of nervy moments but to Ream’s credit he pressed well and wasn’t directly responsible for Mexico’s goals (maybe could have done better on the Llainez goal but someone centrally should have covered better once Llainez got pushed that way).

Need Richards to grow up fast because CB is a big yikes right now. Not a huge Acosta fan but I thought he did great at left back which is where he started his professional career.

Also if you watched Chelsea Pulisic has to have a hold up #9 to flourish. Sargent is a good player but he’s just more flicks and tricks which we have plenty of already in attack.

McKenzie is a poor man’s young John Stones, and that might be a compliment.

Dike needs to go to a team that doesn't play with the ball in the air 90% of the time. How do you evaluate a guy that never has the ball at his feet?

Robinson and Richards need to be integrated ASAP, hopefully that starts with the Gold Cup. They each have the athleticism and skill levels that we need next to Brooks in WCQ, assuming Long is still hurt.

The whole Ream and Miazga thing is baffling to me. Don’t understand why Ream made more sense in a back 3. And if GB is just down on Miazga currently (he must be?), then you just couldn’t play a back 3 last night, because that meant Ream.

I thought McKenzie got better as the night went on, which says something for him. People do need to consider how young we are, with several players last night playing their first international match of any consequence against a team of Mexico’s quality. Given GB’s tactical decisions, which put us in a challenging position to put it mildly, the outcome is pretty remarkable.

Ream is left footed. Experience also came into play, I’m sure. It’s probably why Acosta got the start over Musah at the six, too.

Ok, understood. To me, that means Ream is your best back 3 option on the left on your roster, but that means GB had to just scrap the back 3 idea because Ream cannot be on the field against a team like Mexico.

I think people are overly critical of Ream because of the times he was 1v1 with pacy attackers. Ream looked good when pressing, passing out of the back, and defending deep. I’m not sure if any of the times he got burned actually led to a shot on goal. I think Ream looks better if Dest actually tries to play defense. Maybe Gregg should have subbed Dest out sooner. Ream was the experience pick in this game, imo, but I hope we phase him out and find a true back four we can consistently rely on.
