They amended my taxes a couple weeks ago and posted a reduced refund to a concerning level. I went back and reviewed everything and found no issues.

Well I got an explanation letter yesterday and they completely got it wrong.

I’ve tried to call and follow a list of steps I found online and have gotten nowhere.

Anyone have any recommendation here?

The letter even says if I don’t agree with the charges to call this number, which I have. It also says they’ll assume that I agree with the information if they don’t hear from me.

Mother frickers.

Yep, you pretty much just have to call and be on hold for a while until you finally get to talk to someone. Best of luck.

They sent me a letter saying that I owed an additional $180. Never had that happen before. I know that it's not going to be worth the time it takes to fight it, so I'm just going to pay it.

You just have to call and wait. Make sure to have all supporting documents in front of you when you call...these people don't have the patience to wait on you to find statements. Good luck

Write them a letter giving your explanation and documenting everything. You will probably get further than wasting 4 hours of waiting on a phone line hoping to speak with someone.

However, if you are correct in your findings, they will not give you the interest on that money as if you owed them. Or least that was my experience.

Call early on a tuesday or wednesday I'd say. I wouldn't call on a Monday and I doubt Fridays are great either.

We tried to call the IRS for our company today. The message said they are too overwhelmed to take calls and hung up.

Basically you're going to have to sit on the phone for 3-4 hours and hopefully they can answer your question. They might transfer you somewhere else half the time you call which May or may not have the same wait time as the first number you call.

Or you can send in a letter explaining the disagreement and request the full refund. Of course they’re about 4 months behind on the mail so also not a great option.

Basically it’s a giant pain in the arse.

You might get this message also. Keep calling back. It won’t say that for long.

Everyone wants to cut IRS budget.

Until you realize the IRS works on a "guilty until proven innocent" system, and the guy who you need to proclaim your innocence to... won't answer the phone.

My CPA firm does any of this that needs doing for me.

I have had to file income tax returns in several US States for the past several decades.

There is one (not mentioning names, M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I) that annually sends me a dirty demand notice for things that I have already paid to them.

I will love it when I no longer have to deal with them.

I had an issue with IRS I couldn’t get resolved on my own so I went to my congressman’s office.Gave a written statement to his assistant and they were able to take care of it fairly rapidly.

We're pretty small. My wife has a bookkeeping firm and does all of my books. Fortunately for me, she's the one who deals with the IRS. I ain't got time for that shite.
