It must be a recent thing. I don't remember any gate fees when I was kid, including state tournaments etc.

Depends on what classification you are playing. AA and AAA you can find a bunch of tournaments every weekend, but once you hit Majors you have to travel to find competition.

yep majors is not easy to find tournaments, especially if you are older. But you can play 2d select series and usually there is a tournament in BR/NOLA area or houston area or dallas area or mobile area. If you look between USSSA, 2d, OTC, PG, GSSA there is almost always a tournament for even majors within 2-3 hour drive.

might be playing the same teams over and over again which sucks though.

thats not true at the better schools. Even like barbe has many that play football and baseball.

Was talking with a couple HS baseball coaches last night, both indicated that they really liked the football/baseball players.

But if you are an elite player, 16-17 or so is about the time to really specialize.
Probably so, and the word ELITE is thrown around way too often.

but in general baseball players are usually better athletes than other sports. Baseball is fricking hard and requires a lot of time. I mean in soccer, like your kid plays, a big kid that is fast as hell and can kick hard as hell is going to have a place. Sure his footwork and ball handling might suck but he can be used for something. Put that kind of kid on a baseball field and the only thing he is good for is a pinch runner and he better get up to speed quickly on situational baseball.
I think that is because we dont have a depth of soccer players, but I get your point. Baseball requires a pretty specific skill set and it would be very difficult to make up for lost ground. I dont think there is any need to specialize for the largest portion of players.

not sure if you're joking or not but thats how 2D is or at least that's how they used to be. Each team pays the ump directly before or after the game.

How do you charge someone money to come to something you don’t own?

Do you go to concerts? Do you ever pay a cover to get into a bar and then still have to buy your beer or drinks?

You think those bands play for free? They dont own the area or bar.

Ever been to Jazz Fest? You think Quint Davis owns the Fairgrounds?

Rarrrr...

Why can't we go back to the old days where we played our saturday morning ball game at the park. no gate fees. $1.50 10k's. Johnny picked up that roller of a hit from SS and threw that ball so good to first base that should have been caught for the out. Man, they balled so hard back then.

because those turf fields dont pay for themselves.

Sell beer at the concessions and they will come and you will have all turf infields.

even world seris is pay at the plate now for usssa.

i think they went to it and lowered the fees per tournament.

everyone bitches about usssa in LA, but its a shite ton better here than other places. I have friends in the houston area paying upto $500 per tournament for 8u playing on shite arse grass fields plus having to pay at the plate. In LA, even the world series is less than $150 for 8u and you play on turf fields.

Dont get me wrong, sports production, traction, etc all make good money on these tournaments, really good in fact, but they arent going crazy with it like other places are.

We played a lot of Grandslam and OTC....went to Cooperstown then now he plays summer ball with his hs team during the week and plays with a showcase team on the weekends. first summer ball game is tonight and then he plays in mobile this weekend
