One that you can eventually parlay into owning your own company working for yourself.

Electrician
HVAC
Plumber

I wouldn't do welding, I'd get on a fab shop and let them teach me for free while prove that I can show up with a clean head. He could also see if it's right for him.

ETA; you could also let him know that Tugboat Captains are always in demand and make $100,000 working 1/2-2/3 out the year within 5 years. Another option is a tankerman, they are in demand as well. However you'll be working in the elements on a barge.

Electrical and Instrumentation. You can do that a lot longer than welding. Plumbing is dirty work but it pays well. HVAC is good too but you will have to open your own business to make serious coin.

Automotive body technician. Seriously, you can write your own check at this point. Our industry is struggling to recruit. There’s no one coming up in this field. The “grow your own” technique has gone out the window because no one wants to start at the bottom.

Seriously (again), if this would even be on his radar, skip the school, hire in as a helper and learn the trade while you get paid.

Some of my guys earn $100k+ a year, full medical/dental/vision, 401k. There’s no travel and every job is different. Most toolboxes have wheels and there isn’t a market in the US that isn’t hiring right this very second.

ETA: if you’re good, there’s no way you’re making less than $56/hour in the market.

If any of my kids struggle in college I’m immediately enrolling them in school to be an Elevator Mechanic. The union is very strong and their guys are making between $45-50 an hour.

Mechatronics Technology. Silly name, but someone has to build and repair the robots that will eventually replace most of us.

This is the correct answer.

I sell technical training equipment and curriculum to technical schools. Mechatronics/robotics is where the money is and it ain't stopping anytime soon. Learn how to program and, more importantly, repair robots and he'll be set for many years to come.

Honestly, good for him. We need more people like your brother. Electrician is what I’d recommend.

Thanks. A lot of us are paying sign-on bonuses and moving expenses. We (all of us) are desperate for good techs.

Probably stamps.
Although, that Pokiman is really hip with the kids these days.

If I were starting over, it would be in HVAC, and I would specialize in repair. Yes the work is hot, but by your mid-30's you can be running your own crew and making bank if you're smart about it and dedicated.

Don't go into machining. The industry is going to be turned upside down by robotics, and what you learn in trade school is almost completely worthless. The starting pay is lower than most other trades because it takes much longer to be a competent machinist than almost any other tradesman. I run a machine shop for what it's worth.

The guy who plumbed my house was a certified plumber and electrician. I know he makes more than I do and chooses his own hours.
