JetBlue founder David Neeleman's new budget airline, Breeze Airways, will fly 10 new direct routes from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport beginning in July, making the city one of the new carrier's four main bases when it commences operations later this month.

The new airline from Neeleman, who has launched four other airlines over the past four decades, is aiming to tap demand for direct, low-cost travel to smaller and mid-sized U.S. cities that are known for attracting leisure travelers.

The first flight from New Orleans will be on July 8 to Charleston, South Carolina, followed by Akron/Canton, Ohio, on July 15. The other new routes are: Bentonville/Fayetteville, Arkansas (July 15); Huntsville, Alabama (July 15); Louisville, Kentucky (July 15); Norfolk, Virginia (July 15); Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (July 15); Richmond, Virginia (July 15); Tulsa, Oklahoma (July 15); and Columbus, Ohio (July 16).

The good news is that this will give MSY hub status again, even if its' for a smaller airline.

The bad news is that if Southwest was on the fence about officially making a hub out of MSY, they likely aren't going to now - although MSY is still clearly a focus city airport for them.

I also suspect Austin is going to eventually become a Delta hub, so there will be more direct flights to Louisiana cities to Austin eventually. Which is also good for Louisiana.

The Charleston direct is way overdue.

LFG! the airline really isn't affiliated with JetBlue, just happens to have the same founder (he also started Azul in Brazil).

Also - I believe he'll originally start out flying Embraer E-190s and eventually switch to Airbus A220s once they start receiving them.

It's more to service the people living in those "meh" places that want to visit places like Charleston, Tampa, New Orleans, etc. on holiday.

Good thing there isn't a direct flight to Atlanta. That'd be one trashy flight...

Both great planes IMO. Similar in size to the CRJ-900 but a little more width.

Smaller than a 737, but more pleasant than the smaller regional jets like the CRJ-700 or CRJ-200 or the tiny Embraer. The A-220 is a bit larger and looks really good (originally a Bombardier).

Hmmm.. direct flights from New Orleans to:

Oklahoma City
Tulsa
Fayetteville
Louisville
Huntsville
Columbus, OH
Akron/Canton
Richmond
Norfolk
Charleston

Not much for me there.

Just for everyone's knowledge these flights are booking at $39 each way so if you have a weekend trip planned within the southeast I'd take a look at these flights.

Those towns are getting new service to a lot of tourist cities. And since MSY is a hub, they may stop in New Orleans just to catch a flight somewhere else.

What a weird combo of directs.

Why the heck wouldn't they do directs to San Antonio and Tampa??

Both of those would make far more sense than Columbus or Norfolk.

People from those locations coming to New Orleans for vacations, not the other way around

Also starting with low competition routes, which is typical.

Another airline ignoring the Austin to New Orleans route. No way that should need a connection.

I would bet the competition and price for gates at Bergstrom is insane given how popular Austin has become and the airport is not that big. Most of these airlines are chasing cheap gates.
