Also didn’t think anything of Channing Tatum going into Jumpstreet but he’s ended up being a hilarious physical action comedy star

I was fairly shocked how good Tatum was in White House Down

Came back to post Tatum. I knew Tatum from his dancing movies my wife would watch back when we were dating.

There are some really good ones mentioned here. I'll chime in on two:

Shia LaBeouf - I dismissed him as a serious actor too early. As crazy as he is, he's talented.
Bill Hader - I remember watching a South Park doc/behind the scenes when Hader just sat in his chair laughing at everything goofily that Trey Parker said. Then I watched him in The Skeleton Twins, and of course Barry. I didn't see that coming from him.

then hitman and i was actually kinda surprised at how well he did it. didn't have HBO to see deadwood, but he changed my mind completely in Justified.

Justified really cemented him.

He had a great minor role in Tarantino's Hollywood movie.

He's at his best as a cowboy, without a doubt. He basically played a similar role in Fargo season 4 (?) recently.

But he can be very funny too, as he was in Santa Clara Diet.

I'm gonna say Robin Williams. Never thought Mork from Ork would be a big star from that. He even had range although he was mainly slapstick. Think about Patch Adams and later movies like One Hour Photo where he was really creepy.

Hated No Country For Old Men the first time I watched it because it didn't progress how I expected but now it's one of my favorite movies.

I wish Santa Clarita Diet got picked up for another season, I liked the show. I think Olyphant was great in this role, different than Deadwood and Justified - and I think it's more to his nature if you watch interviews and such.

Btw, Victor Fresco (Santa Clarita) has been a part of some good shows that got canceled before they should have - My Name is Earl, Better Off Ted, etc.

the Nice Guys

Criminally under-promoted film.

I'll show up promoting this film every time it's mentioned in this board. I don't think I've ever laughed harder at a movie the first time I saw and still cry laugh at some of the scenes after however many rewatches. Because Gosling would rather be a human and not live his entire life in the machine he gets overlooked but he's one of the most well rounded actors alive. He's basically Tom Hanks but with sex appeal and physicality capabilities

Good call (Tom Hanks). Going by his early stuff, I didn't see his career taking off like it did and being in so many hit movies.

His appearance in one "Taxi" episode was mainly slapstick, physical comedy for his 2 minutes on air and his role in "Bosom Buddies" with Peter Scolari was no great shakes in television history. I figured both of them would fade into obscurity after that show ended, but that only happened to Scolari who's career has been hit and miss, mostly miss.

Hanks list of movies ranks right up there with some of the very best Hollywood had offered over the years.

And I loved what he had going on in his early years and movies (Splash, Bachelor Party, Dragnet).

He had a Michael Keaton cheeky comedy vibe going then suddenly was getting (and nailing) serious roles.

He feels overexposed now but his run of great movies will be hard to match.

Nothing In Common gave an early glimpse of his dramatic chops

I hated Hayden Christiansen for the SW prequels but thought he redeemed himself some in Jumper.

James Marsters as Spike I wasn’t keen with but he became probably my top character in Buffy/ Angel.

( Inversely - different thread topic - was smitten by Tessa Thompson early on but wow... not a fan )

Denzel Washington

Denzel had me at Man on Fire. Revenge porn at it's finest, I love that movie.

Since a few of you brought up Timothy Olyphant, I immediately liked him in Deadwood. What's crazy is I hated Al Swearingen for a bit. Then I realized by S2 how fricking awesome he was

It's kinda what it is now. Hayden has some good work, but SW is kinda SW - and I think you get this. There are previous SW threads just pissing on Natalie Portman, but she's actually a good actress.

Btw, I'm pretty tossed right now and said so in a couple of chats and texts -- so bear with me mate -- I saw "James Marsters" and read "James Marsden"

I’ll second Mark Wahlberg. Comes on the scene as more/less a knock off Vanilla Ice, and then ends up an A-list actor for the next 25 years.

Timothy Oliphant is very good. Only problem is in my old age I still at times get him and Taylor Kitsch mixed up. They could definitely be brothers.

Ben Affleck is among the top for me. Seemed like a pretty mediocre actor for a while but I think it was The Town when I first started seeing better and on from there.
