Was that really a thing before Training Day?
Not really.
Denzel has played a fairly wide range of characters and was fantastic even in early roles such as A Soldier's Story (and he also shined in the stage version, A Soldier's Play, sharing an Obie). Yes, his first truly noticeable work was in race-themed films - A Soldier's Story (but there are lots of twists in that one), Cry Freedom, Glory and Malcom X.
He's the best black leading man, and possesses character actor skills, in cinema history, IMHO, and one of the best, regardless of demographic novelty.
Comparable to Hanks, probably (although without as much hardware). Hanks was better (particularly younger) at traditional comedy and on the lighter side of the spectrum, but Denzel better at darker (pardon the pun) and more antagonistic roles, despite an effusive likeability.
What do I mean by this? It's easier for an unlikeable guy, take Bale for example, to play an unlikeable character than it is for Hanks or Denzel (or Jack Lemmon, Jimmy Stewart, for that matter).

Now he just wails, yells, screams, and cries. He’s a poor man’s William Shatner and is clearly the most overrated actor in Hollywood.
This is one absolutely incorrect statement.
Whoever said Rob Pattinson and Bradley Cooper, those were terrific answers.
I'll add in Chris Hemsworth. Dude to me is more than just Thor. He's a terrific actor.

I had dismissed Shia LaBeouf as another kid star turned shitty actor, but the dude completely won me over in Fury. The guy can act his arse off if he has the right role and puts his mind to it.
His stuff recently is making me change my mind. Another good one.

Who are you saying has less hardware? Denzel has been nominated for 9 Oscars and won 2 of them.

Jonah Hill. Could have easily fallen into the physical fatty humor and never grown out of it. I thought that’s be his niche.
But he’s killed it in dramatic roles.
Maniac.
Money Ball.
Wolf of Wall street
War Dogs
Also didn’t think anything of Channing Tatum going into Jumpstreet but he’s ended up being a hilarious physical action comedy star.

Woody Harrelson....never would've guessed the dumb bartender on Cheers would become the actor he has.

Also created "Rectify", love that show.

Now that I look at it, they're fairly close for major film wins - Hanks' 8 to Denzel's 6 (and Denzel also has a Tony).
Hanks has 2 Oscar wins (5 noms), 4 competitive GG wins (and a Cecil B. Demille), back to back SAG wins to pair with his Oscar wins. He has 5 BAFTA nominations with no wins.
Outside of Denzel's 2 of 9 at Oscar, he has 3 GGs, and 1 SAG. Notably, no BAFTA nominations.

Kaley Cuoco
Aside from that smokin' hot bod from the 8 Simple Rules and early TBBT years, I thought she was a lightweight who might just disappear after TBBT ended. She made some completely forgettable movies during the TBBT years. I watched one or two of them and those are what made me wonder if she had any future after TBBT. But she hit a home run with The Flight Attendant, in which she was a familiar character but was able to show off much more of her range. She created and produced this project herself. I wonder if indeed her career might have tanked if she hadn't made this move.
You completely left out her voice acting chops in Harley Quinn.

Zac Efron. Thought he was just a modern David Cassidy, but he has range.
He's been hilarious in several of his flicks, was genuinely entertaining in Greatest Showman and was excellent as Bundy.
Completely agree here... he didn’t get enough recognition for how good he was as Bundy imo. I’d love to see him start getting Leo/Pitt type roles

Another great example.... Peanut Butter Falcon is a truly great movie

I was fairly shocked how good Tatum was in White House Down

Movies/TV/Actors that you initially dismissed, but now have a different take...
The first time I watched it (many years ago) I thought it was a cheap knock-off of The Office and turned it off. Then, a few months later, I gave it another shot and totally fell in love with it. Now I consider it one of my all-time favorite TV shows.

I’ll go a bit different route... I thought the concept of Sons of Anarchy was really dumb, used to make fun of my roommate for watching.... ended up watching a few eps w him, and the next thing I know I think I’ve watched the whole series like 6-7 times

Walton Goggins, saw him originally in Major League back to the minors. Didn’t think much of him then. I think he has one of the biggest ranges in Hollywood.

Michael Pitt, remembered seeing him in Finding Forrester as the friend of the main character. Didn't think anything of it. Good fricking actor.
