I know I know, O made a beyond questionable hire without even doing an interview. I know he went 5-5 last year. However, to not have him on the top 10 list is beyond ludicrous. He won a National Championship less than a year and a half ago. I mean for heaven’s sake Mullen was on there... I can understand Lincoln Riley and I can understand Brian Kelley, but I cannot comprehend why Jimbo is so high at 6 and Ed O can’t even make the list. Seems insane.

Mullen deserves to be on that list.

Depends of what the people who created the list value. Mullen and Jimbo are both fantastic X's and O's coaches, who have also proven they can run a program. They have Coaches multiple top 10 teams.Coach O did it with LSU, but failed at Ole Miss. Coach O also can't coach one side of the ball like many of the other top coaches can.

I also don't think winning a championship automatically makes you one of the best coaches. There are over 100 programs, but realistically only a select few have the resources to win a Championship. LSU is one of those schools.

And FWIW, we haven't exactly had a dominant DL since Coach O has been here, and that is supposed to be his specialty.

He "won" a national championship! Whether he caught lightning in a bottle with Joe Burrow or not, his recruiting will keep LSU in the upper echelon. Completely agree that top 10 is unquestionable with current college coaching. OTOH, Pelini was inexcusable....but we move forward. 2020 was T O U G H.

I agree with you.

I'm not understanding why they're putting Jimbo up there ahead of a guy who won a natty. I understand what happened the following year and that didn't help, however, which of those two coaches won a natty?

You can only hold onto that success for so long but two years is still ample time to hang onto it, given last year was an abridged season.

This is why I don't pay attention to the 'experts.'

Play the game, the results will speak for themselves.

Jimbo has won as many national titles as Coach O.

Jimbo has another undefeated regular season and playoff appearance outside of the national title season.

Jimbo just completed A&M’s best season in 65 years.

Jimbo is 2-1 vs Orgeron.

Was Gene Chizick a top 10 coach? (38-38)

Les Miles was not a top 10 coach. His teams won in spite of his pathetic offensive strategies and antiquated coaching style. Great recruiting classes will be a constant at LSU (post Nick Saban) because of facilities, support, and other vital resources. Les Miles was not top 10 at OSU and certainly was not at Kansas.

Orgeron does not have a good record overall as a head coach. He may be a Gene Chizick or he may prove to be a good coach. If you base his standing on one season, then he has too many single seasons that would land him in the bottom half of the rankings. He now has a coaching staff that he assembled and the recruiting classes are totally his. Being ranked in the top 10 is about stability, consistency, and product maintainability. He will soon have the opportunity to show his worth. A repeat of last season and he may not be considered top 10 within his own conference.

With O’s background and overall record prior to 2019, I can see how he isn’t in the top 10. Don’t forget that O kept talking in 2018 and 2019 about how much he learned from coaching mentors and that he was a changed man as a coach after failure at Ole Miss. Then, in 2020, he reverts losing all personal and coaching discipline.

The jury is somewhat back out on O and that is why you don’t see him in the top 10.

And that ranking is P5 only... He would be even lower if it included G5 teams...

These lists always have a distinct recency bias to them in a way.

We just had a terrible season, shouldnt be surprising O is not inside the top 10 out of 130 coaches. He needs to prove he get us back to winning ways and not make blunder hires like Pelini. Also doesnt help him he tends to overshare info to make him look not exactly intelligent like "oh we didnt even interview Pelini".

O can get us back to winning again, no doubt in my mind, 15-0 in 2019 says that. Just a matter of righting the ship and not giving a shite what some top coach list after our worst season in decades says.

O has to show he still has it this year.

Really there only two or three elite coaches and the rest of the next 10 you could randomly order.

Most have seen a few coaches come in win, then fade off...think Chizik. This is Os year to prove himself as the longterm solution.

O also took an average team to the Championship as quickly as any HC, including Saban.
He had record losses of players from that team. Then Covid hit.
He deserves a little slack, IMO.

How many on that list have a winning record vs Orgeron.

You really can’t understand why Jimbo is considered a better coach by most people.
