For those of you with abs/low body fat and muscle, do you still feel a bit flabby unflexed

Been on a cut and seeing good progress. Got 12 more pounds to lose until my goal weight.
Gotta say that despite the changes I’m seeing in the mirror, I still feel fat. Like my belly is still soft and flabby, just smaller.
I’m at 18% body fat (Navy method) if it matters.

Body fat percentages and abs can be somewhat misleading as genetics can play a role in where someone stores fat on their body. Now, there’s not a ton of variation, but, if you took two people with the exact same body fat percentages, one will likely look slightly leaner than the other because he/she carries more fat in their legs.
This isn’t to say that there’s going to be vast differences, but it does play a role. 18% is also still enough fat that you’re going to show fat. Getting “abs,” for most, starts around the 12% and down area imo.

I have abs but still have a little pooch of lower belly fat. Most men need to get in the 10% or lower body fat range to really eliminate it all. Its kind of depressing how skinny you have to be to have a defined six pack. You go from feeling too fat to feeling too skinny. For most guys 6’ tall that means being around 170 lbs. Add/subtract 5 lbs for every inch taller/shorter than that.
Don’t get discouraged though. I’d take monthly pictures of yourself from the back and side as well as from the front. I think you’ll notice a big loss in back/love handle fat that isn’t apparent from looking in the mirror.

And honestly this is way more important than having a six pack imo
Love handle fat kills the V taper which is what really creates an athletic physique

This has always been my weak point. I can get my stomach flat before completely eliminating the love handles. When my love handles aren't showing anymore, it means I'm lean AF by my standards.

yea that is most peoples weak points. until i got true sub 15% on dexa I was still holding fat and felt soft. Below 15% i did not, but still never got a true defined 6 pack.

Yeah, this is crucial. I'm 5'7" and been sitting around 180-185 (182 this morning) for about 2 months. You can visibly see my top 4 abs and ribs, but my navel area is what someone would call straight up pudgy. Not the trash bag look by any means (more of a pooch than a deflated tire), but I just store fat right there. My cousin had the same issue and it took him getting down to 135 at 5'6" to see a fully shredded abdomen.
It's really understated just how much genetics play a role in these things.

I guess my default answer is yes. I had a journal that I was posting my progress in for a couple of months. Then I'd update every month or so. I think my last update was around a month ago and I was back up to 186. I still track and weigh all my food, but I'm really inconsistent. I try to eat in a deficit, and I do for 2 or 3 days, but then on day 4 of the week I'll cave and have a piece of cake or my wife's leftovers. I will say, I've stopped the mindset of if I eat over my calories I can eat whatever I want because I've failed the day. That was a mess for a while.
But to answer the question, right now I'm just trying to hit 175 and see where I'm at from there.

Yeah, he was a golfer in HS and never really lifted. On the flip side I played football and lifted like a maniac. Our athletic ability is about the same, but we just grew up differently in adolescence.

People that go to the gym are never 100% pleased with their current look/feel. You always feel you can do better.

Yep. Especially when I'm working out next to some 18 year old who can eat a shitton of McDonalds and remain ripped.
The best I've achieved is like 14.5% bodyfat and a somewhat visible "4pack". But I also run and do so much cardio, it is hard for me to build muscle.

That is the most surprising thing to me. I am a generally boring person by most accounts. I did enjoy writing it and I appreciate that someone else enjoyed them as well.
I suppose it is kinda like a peek into someone's life, despite the content. If someone was posting regularly about what was going on in their life I think I'd look forward to the updates.

yes, if i sit in a certain position or bend a certain way i'll feel like i might be flabbing or rolling up. When I stand up straight and flex my abs are visible and defined. Pretty sure everyone deals with this to a certain extent.

yeah, despite burning a ton of fat your midsection is usually the last to go (depending on body type but is pretty common). as you progress through your cut and shed your last 12 pounds, i'd be willing to bet you'll still have that feeling to a degree but will noticeably see improvement in the mirror.
Also, body dysmorphia might play into it a little bit. It's one of the few side effects of the BB game.
