re: Is there a buying process that is more soul crushing than buying a vehicle at a dealership

Well I clearly said in the OP that it was partly our fault for test driving so many vehicles. Still, from the time we decided on which one we wanted until the time we drove it off the lot, it was over 3 hours.
And we bought it at one of those no haggle places because I hate the negotiation song and dance. We went with them thinking it might go a little quicker skipping that part, and they gave us a higher initial offer on our trade-in than the traditional dealership we contacted Friday. Once they inspected it, they increased their offer, which was more than I would have asked for.

Eh, that seems a bit simplistic.
If you've settled into the fact that you'll always have a car note, I guess that rings true. No liability that way. But if you buy a car that will last well past the length of the loan, it makes way more sense to buy. I'd imagine people driving Toyotas that have over 300k miles have likely saved massive amounts of money even factoring in repairs
I'm not buying a car for the resale value. I'm buying a car because it's a tool that will be useful for (hopefully) decades.

In my recent experience, I walked in and said, “I’m buying a vehicle today with cash. I’m going to 5 different dealerships. I’m only going once. Give me your best price (one shot). At the end of the day I will go back and purchase the lowest price. Do not call me. I will not answer the phone. You have one shot and 30 minutes to figure it out. Start your watch. Stick to everything you said.

Well that was dumb since lots of makes and models have rebates for financing through the manufacturer that have no penalty for early payoff.

When I was around 20, my buddy and his dad would spend weekends going around to dealerships, with no intention to buy, and test drive, and haggle the price till the salesmen were pulling their hair out.
I haven't done it in a few years, but I bought vehicles on two occasions where they vacillated between begging me to sign and wondering if they should outright cuss me.
Next time I buy one I'm going to go in pre-approved and just keep telling them I won't take their offer on my trade or they can do a better deal on the price. Just keep on fricking with them.

You went to the wrong dealership then lol, granted for me I’m a employee so process is done faster than normal, and I don’t have to ask to test drive a vehicle, or have someone with me during the test drive... still though, even not being pre-qualified the longest part is the finance manager finding a finance company to give you the best rates... 6 hrs they just didn’t care

I drove my last car salesman crazy. And he was pretty pissed by the end, then I told him I no longer wanted to finance and would just pay cash. Started cursing me out.
I like to have fun when buying a vehicle

Got damn boy, I’d bet the dealer was just as happy for you to be gone as you were to be outta there.

This place lets you test drive without a salesman with you. They just hand you the keys and tell you to take your time. We went and ate lunch on one of the test drives.
Other than test driving so many, our biggest mistake was going on a Saturday. Place was absolutely slammed when we got there. Well that, and not having our financing done ahead of time through our credit union. Our loan officer there we work with was off on Friday though.

I too find buying a new car to be an excruciating experience. I always do my homework and know exactly what car I want to buy and how much I am willing to pay for it. I am not the slightest bit impulsive and have no problem walking away if I don’t get the deal that I want. The trouble is, that’s their game and regardless of what they tell you, they are not selling the car below their cost. What should be a happy occasion always leaves me feeling like I got totally fricked.

Bought a F150 a year ago from East Texas. Facilitated the deal over email, unsecured loan through Lighstream, wired dealership money on a Friday, they pulled up with the truck at my office in Shreveport at 9am the following Monday.
Never spoke to anyone over the phone. I will never step foot in a dealership again.

Some asswipe tried this line on me after giving me a price higher than was advertised online and before we had even talked about trade values. I told him not to lie to me me as they would be out of business selling cars at a loss, and he got pissed off. I got a call from his manager to tell me his guy was not a liar, so I said guess that makes you a liar too. Really weird business model Ray Brandt dealers use. I'm sure it will shock you to know we spent our money elsewhere.

yeah going through buying the vehicle and the one you want wont be on the lot for another week. Then in a week they say sorry will be two more weeks on top of the week you waited. and when you do go pick it up its not ready, hasnt been washed, blah blah blah.

I don't know why people are giving you grief about test driving 5 different vehicles
Because you generally know what you want and the price range. I'm not test driving a vette, camaro, Silverado, Tahoe, and a suburban in one day because I want a new vehicle. Need and price range narrows it down a good bit.

No dealer will sell below cost even if they show you how much they have into it vs how much your paying due to the manufacture “holdback” meaning of say a dealership pays $10,000 for a vehicle, they will have a “invoice of $10,300” GM it’s always 3% some cases 4% so no matter what as long as the dealership sells the vehicle for $10,300 they make $300 so no matter what even if they claim to “break even” as soon as the vehicle is reported sold the manufacture will send them the holdback %
