Not to mention the Greek royal family were the vagabonds of European royalty and were booted around Europe for a long time.
As to why he is not a King - Queen Elizabeth is the reigning monarch. A King outranks a Queen, so you can't have him outrank her since she was the rightful blood heir to the throne. Hence, the title of Prince.

He was preceded in death by his teeth.

All of this and then some.
I 100% understand the ambivalence, and occasional outright contempt, for the British royal family and I get all the "we fought a war so we don't have to GAF about those people" comments.
BUT, Prince Phillip had an amazing life, disdained the media and their behavior, did not seek a largely public life, and spent a significant portion of his adult life working on charitable and philanthropic endeavors.
Just read about him for 5 minutes and you'll see his life is worthy of respect and celebration.

He wasn't a pussy he was a badass.
He served his country and his Queen and wife since 1952. Whatever else you may think of the monarchy his dedication and dignity is remarkable in age of muh feels SJW's. The new generation of royals will never measure up to this man.
frick the haters

Agree. 100 would have been epic.
But I’d sign up for 99 right now!

A reigning Queen is a Queen regnant, whereas the wife of a reigning king is a Queen consort.
By comparison, a reigning King is just a King, whereas the husband of a reigning Queen is usually granted some lesser title of nobility. In the case of Great Britain, that title is Prince consort.

quote:that is a bit of a matter of interpretation. Most of Europe's upper nobility are closely-related to one another, and very few of them share much in the way of genetics with their subjects. Charles is the first heir-apparent in quite a long time to marry someone of British bloodlines, with William following suit.
Didn’t realize he was Greek until today.
Remember that the British royal family is basically German. They just changed the family name to Windsor during the War.
Philip was a Mountbatten on his maternal side, and the Mountbattens are British upper nobility. They too changed their name during the War, anglicizing from Battenberg (Batten Mountain) to Mountbatten.
On the paternal side, Philip was a descendant of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg ... yet another German family.

Because the spouse of the monarch is not automatically a King or a Queen. It's a title that the monarch has to agree to and confer.
The Queen never bestowed the title of King on him and they had an amazingly-long and, by all accounts, amazingly happy and trusting marriage.
When Charles becomes King he will have the option of making Camilla Queen Consort. But she will never have the title of Queen outright.

He served with honor in WWII and he played his primary role, that of number 1 supporter of the Queen, beautifully. It can't be easy for a man to play second fiddle to a woman, especially when the spotlight is so brightly on them. And yet he did it honorably. RIP!

It wasn't covid. He was 99 years old and had some serious heart issues.
