I would think twice about installing a Generac.Check reviews on pissed consumer and Consumer Affairs.com,lots of complaints

I've been worried. My parents have one, and I had one at the house I lived in at LSU. Those were fine. Lately, they have not been great from what the reviews have said.

Also I would do an oil change at 100 hours. That is about the interval you change car oil. 100 hours X 50mph = 5000 miles and that air cooled generator is running hotter than a car and getting the guts run out of it with no down time in an extended outage. Any engine run too hot and low on oil is going to cause grief.

1. Don't buy a Generac.
2. Always get several estimates.
3. Don't wait until the last minute.
4. Price and time line sound about right.

5. Maybe you noticed on TV that about 300,000+ people were without utility power recently? Some of them may have been faster to get in line.

If you have a diesel truck or other equipment I would look into a diesel genset with a 200+ gallon tank. Rotate the fuel from tank to truck and it will stay fresh. A 30kw is enough to supply a 200 amp service house and will run everything 24/7 and not burn up. I had a 20kw northern lights on my last house.

Just got to use mine during the tornado last week end. I had to wait 6 weeks and it
Was $8200 with a 250 gal propane gas tank installed, 23KW Genractor. Ran 24 hours and I have 80% gas left.

Diesel machines are the most expensive and fuel can go bad, so I would stay away from diesel unless you can keep a large amount on hand and keep freshening it with new deliveries such as a farmer or trucker would do. Also keep spare fuel filters and school yourself on changing them without air locking your system. Diesel will grow a fungus so a good biocide is needed to keep your stored diesel from causing trouble.

I know I beat a dead horse with this, but I don't know why propane isn't more popular for whole house generators. Sure you have a somewhat limited supply, but if that supply will last you 2-3 weeks or more that's usually fine. Just seems to me like its more fool proof in the times of a natural disaster then relying on a utility company even if its buried lines.

During our last outage several people I know had their NG supply go down. No gas = no generator. I believe the Generac is easy to swap back and forth from propane to NG. NG gives less KW than propane but is much cheaper. If it were me I would keep a couple hundred gallons of propane on hand for NG shutdowns. Unlike diesel propane stays good in storage.

I had no idea any of those companies offered built in residential generators with service contracts. Building a house soon in south Louisiana.

May have to look.

Is this normal in the industry or something? Are there no generators available?

I called and inquired about a quote. The person told me that it would be weeks until they could come out for an estimate due to a surge of new generator orders from the ice storm.

Somebody likes Generac. When I bought my Generac 4 years ago I bought 100 shares of stock in Generac for $50 a share. Today it is $337.
