What brand is the best? I’m not a big time bourbon guy but I’m hooked now. Also orange slice or lemon slice?

Angostura or Pecheuds. I like both but lean Ang

Orange bitters is a great addition as well. Always orange, never lemon for OFs. And do an expressed orange peel, not a slice. You want the oils from the peel to add the flavor without cutting the bourbon down with the juice.

Bokers Bitters. Had it at a bar in Jackson, MS and it’s my favorite. Have to order it online, but worth it.

I like orange and a marashino cherry with a we bit of the cherry juice syrup. It acts as the simple syrup.

Angostura. Peychaud's is good too if you can't find angostura.

I second the orange peel. Make sure it's a maraschino cherry.

My go-to is a bourbon with a dash of Peychauds bitters and a dash of Regan's Orange bitters.

I make simple syrup, it is easy 1:1 ratio of sugar to water, cook till clear. The orange peel is key, you want the oils from the peel, cut peel the orange, I like to twist the peel and rub on the inside of the glass rim before dunking the peel in the drink.

I use Regans' orange bitters - I'm surprised not to see it being mentioned. I think it's made in New Orleans.

I recently purchased this Barsmith - Old Fashioned mix though. Interested to give it a whirl.

Angostra for the bitters and stay away from the lemon. I ordered 1 at the Happy Note years ago and Judy didn't have any oranges, so we tried a lemon. To me it was terrible. I started bringing my own oranges after that.

1/4 Oz simple syrup
2 dashes Angostura butters
2 Oz Bourbon (or Rye)

Stir in a mixing glass with ice until cold. Strain into another old fashioned glass filled with ice. Express the oils of an orange peel over glass and add to drink. Top with a maraschino cherry.

This is about the perfect drink for me. I like Buffalo Trace or Elijah Craig for my standard old fashioned, though just about any bourbon will do.

Check out Bourbon Real Talk on YouTube if you want to learn more about bourbon itself. The guy does a great job of teaching.

Uptown and old Metry posters may know Mr. James from bartending house parties. He came out with his own bitters a few years back and is crushing it!

I haven’t used Peychauds in years

Angostura and Orange

I like to take a kitchen torch and lightly torch the orange peel before adding it to the OF.

ETA: had an OF at a bar here in Colorado Springs that used their own house made tobacco bitters and it was maybe the best OF I’ve ever had.
