After Dale Brown's analysis of Pete Maravich's shooting...

According to Bill Walton, Maravich would've averaged 57 points a game at LSU if there was a 3 point line back in the day.

I saw him play often - I was in graduate school during his time at LSU. He would bring the ball over the half court line, and if nobody challenged him he would take a shot from far out. If he was checked as he brought the ball across he would usually take it around the defender for a closer shot. If he was double-teamed, he either passed to the open man (he led the team in assists), or take it himself for a lay up.

And thats what they charted him shooting long shots without there being a 3 point line. If pistol knew there was a 3 point line he'd have probably used it way more.

Did Dale ever say how many 3s Pete attempted? I’m curious about the percentage.

Those guys could shoot, and would simply take the best percentage shot, wherever it was on the court. I remember watching guys taking tons of 16-17 ft bankshots from the wing, dead-money.
Nobody shoots that anymore, because you can step back a bit and it's a 3. And as you move back, the bank gets harder so you don't learn the angle.
But back in the day (I know
For those who used to watch the NBA in Nola (Chris Paul and the Crescent City Connection etc), remember David West sniping away from about 17 ft? Dude was lethal from there, almost layup %. Lots of guys USED to be that way, but it's still not quite as good a shot as a layup, and not scored as well as 2 steps further out. So nobody does it anymore.

Maravich was the GOAT of all GOATS. Absolute one-of-a-kind.

You're absolutely right about the shooters in Pete's day. It was also a lot of fun to watch those guys play their entire careers. Instead of the one & done of today, we really got to watch their game develop over time.
Pete was the best, but Rick Mount at Purdue was a really good pure shooter and Calvin Murphy of Niagara was very good. All three lit it up.

The video said that the 3 point line started the last year he played in the NBA when his knees were in bad shape, and he still made 10 of 15 (66%).

Nothing against the amazing Pete Maravich but this is nonsense fellas. According to that statement, Maravich hit 13 threes per game (avg 44 without 3’s). If you throw in the free throws he made per game, this would mean that approx 13 of his 17-19 fg’s per game were from three point range. Sorry but this doesn’t add up. Maybe this sheds more light on why Dale never could take teams to the next level...

Right and Maravich DID have the basketball arena named for him.
The Maravich’s left LSU with dignity and grace but Brown vowed to TEAR DOWN LSU MBB if fired, but he was fired anyway!!

Yeah, sure.
Dale Brown actually analyzed Maravich's shooting.

Some of his passes to Sanders under the basket, or to Hester on the wing were beautiful. One of Pete's teammates said you had to be on your toes at all times, Pete's passes would often catch them unaware because it appeared he was looking elsewhere.

You are correct. It's basic math and logic. In order for it to be true, over 75% of his made field goals would have to be from 3 point range.

No wonder Dale couldn’t coach.
He was spending all his time watching old tape of Pete Maravich.

Just shooting from the elbow. Money.

Maravich was a legend. Brown was a wannabe.

When the opposing fans carry you off the court, you are not good; you are absolutely the very best.

It wasn’t Dale that did the analysis. It was one Sam Cook with the Advocate I believe. I heard Dale in a recent interview make that point. Up until then, I never heard that.
