British people use it a lot. That's why the daily mail used it. That should have been obvious to the dumb asses at teen vogue.

I had never heard the word until I watched Schitts Creek. The character Moira Rose played by Catharine OHara says it. The line is “That fussy little fricker. Niggling me with ridiculous requests...”

I remember a few years ago at Moes, I wanted black beans so I told the girl who was black I wanted Frijoles Negros and she said we don’t call it that and gave me a look. Lol

It's very niggardly of someone to say niggling is racist.

Yup...the illiteracy of the reader indicates racism on behalf of the writer. Makes complete sense in 2021.

The Progressives and Liberals have been niggling pains our asses and our wallets for years? Is that correct usage?

Wouldn't normally throw that little gem of a word around, but I'll try harder now.

The word itself is not remotely racist, and the very notion is utter nonsense.

Now, let's look at the circumstances in which it was used and as to which complaint is made.

The Daily Mail used it in relation to Meghan Markle, at the time of her engagement to Prince Harry.
quote:

headline from their columnist Sarah Vine: 'Yes, they're joyfully in love. 'So why do I have a niggling worry about this engagement picture?'
There are probably a dozen synonyms which would have conveyed essentially the same meaning.

Was the author being "racist?" Almost certainly not. But I don't discount the possibility that she selected her terminology to generate a mini-controversy and draw some attention to herself.
