Stupid. 1-0 lead happens with 0 outs or 1 out if he hits in two hole. With Morgan in one, how about starting a game with a 2-0 lead?
If you listened to Ben, he just explained the reason, more ABs

Bens a homer. Understandable.

If he isn’t pulled, he’s about to come up with no one on base for the 6th time today. Great!!!

No such a thing.

Innings or ABs that don’t result in runs are not productive.

You want your best hitter to get the most at bats with runners on base. Not the most at bats. Batting lead off and behind the two worst hitters is not how you do that. 3 for 4 with 5 rbi is light years better than 4 for 5 with one rbi.

Crews batting lead off instead of 3 hole did get him an extra at bat this game. I am not saying I agree with him at lead off, just throwing this out there.
I also think he’d be great in the three hole, but these analytic guys put the best hitters first now. I don’t like it, but they say the extra ABs over time add up.

Debating whether or not Crews should bat first or elsewhere in the order is good baseball talk, however, pointing out where guys bat deep in the game is juvenile. Other than the first inning no coach can dictate when in an inning a kid can hit.
Why do you think the argument is based on where a hitter bats in an inning? That is absolutely not what this is about. Where you bat in the ORDER, dictates who is batting around you, and has everything to do with your chances of batting with men on base throughout a game.
There is a reason that teams, for well over 100 years, structured their lineups with guys who could get on base at the top of the order, and put their power guys in the middle. If you put your power at the top, they're hitting, more often than not, with less, or no runners on base, and if you stack the on-base guys all together throughout the rest of the lineup, you're counting on them to string a bunch of hits together to produce runs.
If you have an awesome lineup, then obviously it matters less how you structure it. LSU has a poor bottom of the lineup, and since they immediately precede Crews, that means no matter what inning he is batting in, he will most likely bat with no one on. That, in my opinion, is poor lineup management.

Arnold and Gio (upon return) would be perfect 8-9 hole options
Sounds great until you play a close game with the last two outs being Thompson and Milazzo.
You have to put your worst hitters somewhere, and that means a good hitter will come up with no runners because they were put out. If Crews is such a great RBI guy that you feel compelled to have runners on for him, then move him back to three. Giving more at bats to crummy hitters is NOT the answer!

Yeah, the reason is that they never really studied the data.

Lead off equals at least 25 more AB’s this season. Just put a high OB % guy in the 9 hole.

I want him second. No way the game ends with the leadoff batter 25 times out of 65 games.

At least he’s getting pitches to hit from lead off spot
They are not walking the lead off guy
Otherwise they start pitching around him

That’s just one AB. They have already started to pitch around him in the later ABs. Look at his last AB vs Nicholls yesterday.

I responded to a poster who was upset because better hitters were leading off innings deep in the game. A coach had no control of who bats first in an inning unless it’s the first inning or he inserts a pinch hitter.

I understand all that and I agree, I never advocated Crews hitting lead off even though many modern day baseball aficionados do like the Mike Trouts, the Betts, and the Crews types hitting first.
And as I stated earlier, discussing the batting order is good baseball discussion and part of the fun of the game.

quote:Eh. He does have some control. A person who gets out often (low OBP) will have a higher chance of being the 3rd out of the inning and therefore the person batting next will lead off an inning more often. But generally, what we want is for Crews to bat with people on base. And that means getting him behind at least one batter with a good OBP.

I don't like this argument either. So far this season, 1 and 2 in LSU's lineup have the exact same number of plate appearances.
