Another pointless hazing death, in today's issue of "Greek life is stupid."

I fully expect the resident fratstars to come defend their sacred rituals of hazing and being douchebags, but here we are. Victims aren't we all.

A Loudoun County family is mourning the loss of Adam Oakes, a VCU student who died at an off-campus residence on Saturday.
Adam’s dad and cousin say they’re heartbroken over losing who they call their teddy bear, who was full of love and wanted to show that to everyone he met.
“He wasn’t just a good kid or good person to us, he was to everybody,” said his cousin Courtney White.
The family believes hazing is to blame for his death - and they just want answers.
Family members say that after a night of heavy drinking, Oakes passed out at the Delta Chi fraternity house and was discovered there the next morning.
“He had already tried to get into other fraternities and had been turned down, but he saw the comradery. He’d see the brotherhood and just loved the actual acceptance,” said Adam’s father, Eric Oakes.
Adam was offered a bid to join Delta Chi. His family says he had to go to a party on Friday night to start the initiation process.

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - A Loudoun County family is mourning the loss of Adam Oakes, a VCU student who died at an off-campus residence on Saturday.
Adam’s dad and cousin say they’re heartbroken over losing who they call their teddy bear, who was full of love and wanted to show that to everyone he met.

Adam was offered a bid to join Delta Chi. His family says he had to go to a party on Friday night to start the initiation process.
“At 9 p.m., he texts his dad and just said, ‘I’m going in. Love you.’ and he went in,” said White.
That was the last time they heard from Adam, who was found dead on Saturday morning in the off-campus house.
His family says two pledges told them he was forced to drink a handle of Jack Daniels whiskey that night. His family also heard he was blindfolded and ran into a tree.
“They told us he passed out on the couch, on his side by about 11,” said White. “They checked on him at 12, he was breathing and he was on his side. By the next morning, when they checked on him at 9, he was face down and dead.”

The reports of hazing have not been confirmed by police or VCU, however, Delta Chi fraternity’s national office issued a cease-and-desist order to the VCU chapter on Saturday. The university took similar action on Sunday and is continuing its own investigation.

This is 100% because hazing and drinking have been driven deep underground.

Sounds like you had a traumatic college experience. Did you get beat up, have a girlfriend stolen, or both?

There are so many ways to get involved on campus besides Greek life
It’s an antiquated, stupid system.

Hazing
People want to do everything done to them plus a little extra.
Eventually it ends in death or injury.
It may take years to get there but it does.

Seems more likely due to drinking than hazing.

I’ve met some good dudes that were in frats. I’ve met a helluva lot more douchebags that were in frats.

He made the choice to be there, he could have walked away. Also there’s just as many alcohol and drug related deaths of college students that weren’t Greek but they rarely make the news

Not defending this, but several other orgs force new members to drink or “haze” in other ways. Not limited to Greek life at all.

Hazing if done the right way makes you a better person. Sorry you didn’t get a bid

Idk who would pay frat dues this year when you can't have any official social events.

I don't really get the making people drink to haze them thing. And seems like it could be combination of being drunk and a head injury by what the article gives us.
But thousands of dudes have joined fraternities and didn't die drinking.
And non frat people have died drinking in college.
Maybe the issue is alcohol. Not necessarily all clubs or social gatherings.

Based on my experience...99% of your "Brothers" will never talk to you again after you graduate from college.
Most wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire. It ain't worth it.
It was cool to go to a few big parties for a year or 2....but I couldve had a lot more money to have fun with and couldve pulled just as much arse without the frat.
Most of the dudes in the frat with me were extremely wealthy entitled wannabe redneck rowdy gentleman douchebags. The Jackson, Memphis, and out of state kids idolized real deal North MS rednecks like me and the other baws from my hometown in the frat. They all wished they were from the Delta.

Your shock headline isn't backed up by facts. Prove that Greeks die at a higher rate in college with hazing accidents. My guess is it's lower than the GDIs because they have slaves ala pledges.

Believe it or not this happens to kids who aren’t in fraternities. I know of one who was my age and died this same way.
The reality is no level of risk is acceptable in society anymore to people like you. Everything you don’t care about is stupid and zero risk is acceptable, but everything you enjoy is allowed to have risk.
For example, how fast did you drive to work this morning?
Thousands of lives of men, women, and children would be saved every year if you would just drive 20 mph to work.
Or we could ban all pools and save hundreds of kids lives every year.

The culture of using hard liquor to get trashed is at the core of these issues

Forced drinking for hazing is stupid, but is infinitely more dangerous with liquor, as opposed to keg beer (natty light). Never understood beatings over calisthenics for hazing purposes as well.
