Another Harry Potter one and probably the worst mistake listed here yet, but Umbridge following Harry and Hermione into the Forbidden Forest where she’s implicitly gang raped by centaurs.
Then why not make one of those pieces a grain of sand on the ocean floor? Good luck finding that shite. Ol' baw would have been locked in.

He made lots of dumb mistakes. Gringotts and that cave were decent places to hide Horcruxes, but the rest were just exceptionally stupid. Voldemort thought he was the only one to find the Room of Requirement with all that shite in there? It was O/U 30 years before someone found the Diadem.
But I’d for sure rather make those mistakes and die than get gang raped by centaurs. I can’t imagine many things worse than that and having to live with that trauma.

I don't think there was much time between the end of Rouge One when they sent the transmission with the stolen plans to when the Death Star was destroyed. The Rogue One ending scene and opening of A New Hope are pretty much the same scene.
Plenty of time, how about sending a fleet of Star Destroyers?

After making basically every single perfect decision throughout the film, Hans Landa lets Aldo Raine cuff him and then this happens.

Kahn leaving Kirk on Genesis (his first mistake) . . .
Of course, this pisses Kirk off . . .
They escape, then Kirk and Spock have the ole “two-dimensional thinking” conversation (“Yours is Superior” Kahn’s second mistake) . . .
Kahn becomes roadkill . . .
Kirk gets to say . . .

Going to the future to fight The Avengers when could’ve essentially copied their plan and still carried out your goal, as you were in a different timeline.

They already took the Power and Soul Stones in that timeline (and very possibly the others if the Avengers merged in the same timeline but that was in the latest of the timelines). No he couldn’t. His best plan of action was to recall all of his army, massively produce the Pym Particle, and go to the future and blow the shite out of the Avengers hoping they succeeded in their plan. That was really his only option at that point.
I was about to type out that Thanos fricked up earlier in the timeline by not invading Earth during the time of the original Avengers or earlier, but there was someone alive and carrying an Infinity Stone very capable of defeating him in The Ancient One. Thanos needed the Power, Space, Reality, and Soul Stones to defeat Dr Strange. She would have sliced Thanos apart. I also think Odin would be capable of defeating Thanos which is why he didn’t go after him earlier.
Now trusting Ronan the Accuser, that was a frick up. Of course he’s going to betray you, so send the Black Order after the Power Stone or do it yourself... which he did eventually so not the most major of frickups.
But really Thanos didn’t have many frickups for a villain. The heroes just beat him.
EDIT: Thinking it through, maybe Thanos shouldn’t have gone to the future to get the Infinity Stones. Should have used the Pym Particles to go to the distant pass when the Infinity Stones were created.... or maybe if he did that Thanos would ensure he never lived... I don’t know, it’s complicated with which gamble he’d want to take, but it required Pym Particles regardless.

The Wet Bandits stopping their robbery to seek revenge on Kevin. Could have gotten away with a decent take if they just take the traps on the chin.

10/10 bad idea. I’d be running as far from him as possible.
Actually 9/10. I thought you were referring to him in Home Alone 2 outside of Duncan’s Toy Chest. I might can understand wanting to frick him up in that moment given they just survived their head blown off with blowtorch and face bashed with an iron, why not go further in Home Alone 1?

He reversed engineered Pym Particles. We actually have no idea how long that took him. He could have done that and taken all the time he wanted.

This is what I’m saying. Just go back in time and get them before.
Boom, looking for this?

Why didn’t thanos just kill all the avengers with his snap in addition to 50% of everyone else? Seems like a costly oversight.

Thanos was very clear on this policy.
I think he only deliberately spared Tony Stark and Nebula since he vowed not to kill them.

So he intentionally spared some people therefore it wasn’t random. All that planning and he wasn’t idealistic enough to stick with true randomness and lacked the foresight to just simply kill all the avengers. He choose poorly .
He was actively trying to kill them just seconds before...

Thanos prides himself on being a man of his word until his past self realizes they’re going to succeed in undermining his work. Yeah he snapped his fingers to eliminate half the population minus two. After he found out what happened in the future, Thanos drops the act. Thanos is only civil so long as he’s in control no matter what happens to him personally. So long as he gets his goal of purging half the universe, he’s as considerate as one can be with such a goal. frick this up though, then he shows his true colors.

Christof in the Truman Show.
At some point in Truman's life he learned about: explorers, famous landmarks that were NOT on Seahaven, boats, etc...
There was a travel agency ON the island (granted, it was promoting NOT travelling), but still.
It would be pretty easy to simply not teach those things to Truman to begin with, and trust that he wasn't the type of once in a generation talent that could outright invent a boat with no pre-existing knowledge that such a thing was possible.
But no, for some reason they had to pique his interest at a young age about the concepts of travel and how vast the world actually is.

The Silence of the Lambs
1. Buffalo Bill disposed of his victims in various rivers but went to the extra trouble of weighing down the first one - which caused her to be the third girl found. Through Lecter's help, Clarice deduces that he did this because he knew her and wanted to hide his connection to her. Clarice then goes back to the first victim's hometown and follows up on people associated her, which leads to Buffalo Bill's house.
2. Buffalo Bill letting an FBI officer into his home with a deaths-head moth flying around while he fumbled through some cards to find a phone number.
3. Buffalo Bill not having his gun cocked and ready when he had Clarice helpless in the dark.
