Stinky Sock Sydrome in HVAC

Holy Moly. With this timely warm up, I am getting blown out of my house today with the smell.
Who else has dealt with this and has any recommendations on fixes.
I have AccuTemp, and they love to blame it on LA humidity, etc and recommend a $1000 air scrubber. Would this totally eliminate the issue?

Coil needs to be replaced. Some coils especially in newer units with the material they are making them makes it more susceptible. Mine is getting replaced and new one and is receiving some special protective coating.

Not sure why I’m receiving the down votes, but the option to replace the coil was the ultimate solution once the coil was cleaned. This was the solution presented by Rheem. If you google sweaty sock syndrome this is often the outcome, either remove the coil and send it off to receive this coating or get a new coil and have that coil also coated and replaced.

Doesn't always work. Our new house has this issue and I had the AC guy open up the units and look. Coils were clean.

It’s not dirt it is microscopic bacteria that grows on the coil

Good ole aluminum coils. Get used to it, will pop up every now and then. Our AC guy was able to almost completely eliminate our issue by setting the blower to run a little longer after the cooling cycle. I added the cheap UV light kit after and that completely eliminated it.
Ours would do it bad if we want out of town during the spring and summer and kicked the units up while we were gone. I’m guessing that allowed the organisms to grow better.
One of my friends have a new unit that seems to do it regularly when the temp is just warm enough to kind of short cycle the system. He added the UV kit and it helped but he said his ac guy said his unit did not have the option to extend the fan run after the cycle.

If you can get access hit it with some coil cleaner and it will go away for a while. At least you won’t have to smell it while you find a solution. And yes, it is a rank smell.

Once you start running the AC more, it goes away. May take a day but it always does. It’s nothing to do with the coil, or I should say you don’t have to replace them

Yes it is the coil. The suggestion was to buy a new coil, get it coated, then replace.

If that's convered under warranty, do it. But I wouldn't spend $$$ on new coils if it's not. I buy a really good charcoal filter for spring when we first start running the A/C... The smell lasts about a day with the good charcoal filter. I then use the cheap $7 for a 3 pack filters until late fall.
You'd think as common as dirty sock syndrome is, someone would have figured out a way to solve it by now.

This is for the outdoor unit (condenser). That doesn’t do anything for smells on the indoor side (evaporator). It’s made to protect the unit in coastal areas that suffer corrosion on microchannel coils (which are used for the condenser). Most manufacturers use microchannel condensers which are great when new but salt air will start to deteriorate the coil surface and you get leaks. But again this is for the outdoor unit.
You need to focus on indoor coil cleaning and making sure the drains are kept clear to remove runoff (coil sweating). Maybe then a UV light installed properly to prevent it from happening again.

Replacing the coils fixed my problem. It’s em very well documented that the new aluminum coils when paired with a heat pump is quite common of a problem. Hence why mine was covered by warranty.
