...that they themselves are to blame?
The big bad capitalist corporation literally told all their customers to get out of our plan you will pay astronomic prices if you stay.

Many people in TX were not protected from the decision of having a grid system independent from the rest of the country.

No but I want it to insulate me from unscrupulous utilities.

Yeah two days prior when other companies weren't taking new customers for the most part. Great heads up.

Texas artificially created a barrier for supply-side entry in times of high demand by segregating their grid.
If you frick with the free market and artificially restrict it from performing naturally — like providing additional supply during high demand — then you need to also artificially regulate the price of that supply when it gets depleted.
I don’t think there needed to be consumer protection here — these people fricked up. There needed to be market protection because TX artificially limited the supply and hindered the free market.

Anyone that says price gouging is a good thing should have no problem with this.

How do you know what you are paying ahead of time. I paid my bill from last month. It was 120 bucks. No idea what it will be this month.

Link?
I saw a few people on this board who had this plan who got out of it even after paying a day or two of higher prices and got with a reasonable plan.

This is only happening to people who had that particular plan. We looked into it a few years ago. In general, your bill is cheaper on that plan than a fixed rate per KwH (I've heard in the summer $400-500/ month versus $150), but you get screwed when the market price rises. I am sure a lot of people didn't read the fine print. Also, I believe you needed to sign a contract to get the plan and provide a form of automatic payment, which is typically deducted more periodically than a once a month bill. Very glad we opted for the fixed price plan.
When gas prices are low, the energy company likely loses money on those folks or have very slim margins, so even though people are going to bitch and moan about the huge bills, if those bills are somehow let pass or reduced, there is no reason for those companies to have such a plan. This is when it pays off for them.

My buddy in Houston got this. But it was a mistake
This is mine. I never lost power though, so I was lucky. And seeing what some people went through, it was worth it but still hurts to see. My elec plan is designed to stay under 2000,so anything above that and the charge per increases

That's a stupid thing to sign up for.

bullshite story liberal hit piece against a conservative state. I promise you no individual home owner has a electricity bill that has increased by nearly $10,000 over the last few days. They needed something to divert attention away from Cuomo's Covid-19 policies killing thousands in nursing homes and then hiding the data from the public.

I am very consistent on wanting people to live with the choices they make. Choices made for them are a different story.

Griddy's prices are controlled by the market, and are therefore vulnerable to sudden swings in demand. With the extreme weather, energy usage has soared, pushing up wholesale power prices to more than $9,000 per megawatt hour — compared to the seasonal average of $50 per megawatt hour.
And this is why we have regulated monopolies people.
