It was really a no-win situation

The solution was painfully obvious, make the exact same decision that they made, but make the decision from the beginning instead of changing your mind a split second before the race restarts. Mercedes decided to stay out because the back-markers weren’t going to be allowed to unlap themselves. By the time the decision was changed, Lewis didn’t have an opportunity to get fresh tires. If you want them to race it out, let them race it out with fresh tires.

If Masi would have red flagged the race and did a standing restart, we would have gotten like 5 or 6 laps of greatness.

And two DNFs

Max would have torpedoed into the first turn and taken out Ham

Who had the fastest lap at that time? Hamilton I think.

Would have been cool to see Sainz win though.

This is not true, they never gave indication of that. Lewis was concerned the moment the accident happened.

Im amazed that there are so many Merc apologists here, everyone I actually know is ecstatic with this result.

The result is fine. Max did what he needed to secure the championship. This isn't on him.

The method was shite though.

No, it was flashed on the screen after Max had changed to hards that he had the fastest lap.

Had Max taken out Lewis, I believe points would have been taken away.

The "Hamilton is retiring" storyline is already starting.

Someone is playing up his post race use of "We'll see about next year" as a hint he isn't coming back.

He just re-signed.

He will be back, but I’d imagine isn’t happy about losing Bottas for George.

Correct. They already missed the window when Max boxed the third time. I believe Lewis was on the radio at that time asking if it was a risk not to take new tires.

I think Lewis was ~6 seconds or more ahead when Max boxed the first time and Lewis covered him two laps later. The third time Max boxed, Lewis was ~5 seconds in front and would have come out behind Max on fresher tires.

When Latifi crashed, Toto knew immediately they had fricked up. A late crash or tire failure were the only eventualities that could have kept them from winning.

He was. The race engineer was telling him they would lose track position.

It would be fun to hear the Merc strategist radio between the yellow and Hamilton passing the pit.

Hear how they settled that keeping track position was right solution. If their simulations showed the race would end under yellow or if they were just hoping it would.

Honestly to Mercedes the WDC is nothing compared to the Constructors. If this had decided the Constructors as well then it would be a complete shite show beyond imaginable

Why do you say that? Most people don't give a shite about the constructors and the only thing we remember is the WDC

Big money. No money is handed out for the WDC.

WDC is pride. WCC is 10s of millions.

I don’t particularly care for Lewis or Max but there’s no way you can watch the ending of the race and think that it was handled correctly. Mercedes can only strategize based off the information being provided. When Massi changes his mind after already making a decision, wtf is Toto supposed to do?

Someone went and dug up Masi's comments following the 2020 Eiffel GP.

I'm sure they care about money but do they really care that much when pride is on the line as well? Considering how much the brand name itself is worth? Does it matter that they are the most successful vehicle manufacturer of the group (not counting Honda)? I do know the race teams are a separate entity from the companies that produce vehicles for civilians, or thats my impression at least

Toto was locked into his strategy before Masi decided anything.
