For awhile in the 80s, it was hands down Miami Vice
movies were doing it as early as easy rider, but it took 15 years for TV to follow suit, probably due to the added expense of music rights

Somebody put a playlist on Spotify that's pretty good.
I burned through that show this past summer and fall. It's not exactly great writing, but I couldn't stop watching. Was ready to move to northern New Mexico by the end.

Apparently Gossip Girl? Gf did a watch of it and I remember her mentioning MMJ being in a concert scene and then the soundtrack listing consisting of bands like Spoon, Arcade Fire, etc..
