FBI is on the case.

Hacker altered chemicals in Oldsmar water supply to ‘damaging’ levels, sheriff says

quote:

OLDSMAR, Fla. (WFLA) — A hacker was able to successfully alter the levels of chemicals in Oldsmar’s water supply to ‘potentially damaging’ levels Friday, officials said. Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said on Friday morning a plant operator at Oldsmar’s water treatment facility noticed someone remotely accessed the computer system he was monitoring. The computers are set up for allowing remote access to select people to troubleshoot problems, so the operator didn’t think much about the incident. It happened again that afternoon, however, as the operator could see the mouse moving on the computer screen, opening various software functions that controlled the water being treated in the system.

quote:

Gualtieri said the hacker increased the sodium hydroxide levels in the city’s water from 100 parts per million to 11,100 parts per million. “This is obviously a significant and potentially dangerous increase,” Gualtieri said. “Sodium hydroxide is the main ingredient in liquid drain cleaners. It’s also used to control water acidity and remove metals from drinking water in the water treatment plants.”

quote:

The sheriff’s office does not have a suspect, but Gualtieri said they have a few leads. The FBI and U.S. Secret Service are assisting in the investigation.

obviously they should be using the same security that our election systems use,

because as we all have recently learned,
election systems are unhackable.

Everything in our power and water infrastructure was retroconnected to the internet in the last 20 years without regard to what kind of damage remote accessibility in the wrong hands could lead to. It was only a matter of time.

Network Security 101: don’t do this unless you really know what you’re doing.

They need to fry the motherfricker who did that. I work with sodium hydroxide in my business and it is some NASTY, dangerous stuff. He should legitimately be publicly tied up and stoned to death by the town, I can’t overstate how horrible it is to increase the levels of SH of all things

Flew back from Tampa yesterday. There was a massive water main leak near the airport..now I’m wondering if it was intentional. I drank tons of tap water in our hotel for 3 days.

The hacker could have changed the computer parameters but the dosing pumps in the system are not capable of a 100 fold increase in output.

Its like saying someone hacked my thermostat and turned it up to 11,000F

Water, gas, electricity, railroads, air traffic, ports, nuclear power plants, 911 centers and emergency operations centers are all critical infrastructure that needs the highest levels of security but for some reason, in certain communities, people choose poorly in how they protect these systems from potential terrorists.

Whoever hacked this, if caught, is going to be charged with a terroristic crime and spend serious time in jail.
