I used to think freedom from government was what freedom was all about. I never even thought large corporations and groups of private citizens could do what they’ve been doing lately to silence and harass people.

So what is freedom? If corporations and private groups can “cancel” you, is that freedom even if it’s not the government doing it? If private citizens are free to do what they want, are they free to oppress others? It’s a paradox.

What are your thoughts on this kind of private tyranny?

It really is like the song.

"Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose."

If you have a job or anything else that the mob can steal from you then you have to muzzle yourself.

freedom and liberty are two different ideas that are often confused.

Liberty to be left alone to flourish is what youre yearning for. Freedom "from" government is unrealistic.

Saddened. Weak minds stifle dissent, strong minds convince others to change theirs.

We are being led by weak minds in strong places, always a sure fire disaster.

Freedom comes in many form. Money gives economic freedom. Health gives physical freedom. Critical thinking gives you freedom independent thoughts.

The biggest misconception is being in the US automatically gives you freedom. You have to put in the work if you want it.

Freedom is an ideal. It was the founding principle of this country.

The idea being that we should always err on the side of freedom rather than government - as Thomas Paine eloquently put in Common Sense.

There have been oligarchies in the past. There have been monopolies that have seized control of entire sectors of the economy.

There have never been those that have the same power as Big Tech does today, and we’ve never had a government be such willing accomplices. We will no doubt see legislation controlling it, but that legislation will simply transfer the power of silencing dissent instead of promoting freedom.

In other words, we seem to have lost the ideal of freedom as the guiding principle of this country. Nobody wants it anymore. They want security, even for their feelings.

Freedom, in it’s purest sense, involves a great deal of risk.

All people want is the right to take risk at their accepted levels.

The government wants to minimize risk. That limits freedom.

So we have this constant dynamic between acceptance of risk and mitigation of risk.
Speed limits, stop signs, tax laws, gun laws.... all done to reduce risk but they limit freedom.

I have always seen the 2nd amendment as the ultimate expression of freedom. We can carry guns. Sure, it’s not for everyone but some people enjoy using guns safely and without harming others. Some want them for protection. Some need them for protection. Ultimately though, they are a subtle hint to the government that we have ways to protect ourselves should the government get a wild hair up their arse. Sure, we’d be overmatched but the mere threat that millions of civilians are armed is quite a deterrence.

But guns are incredibly risky if mishandled. They kill easily when shot at a person. Very scary. So this mechanism designed to kill is the symbol of our ultimate freedom.

Parents take stuff away from their kids when they think they need to reign them in- cars, phones... etc. we limit their freedom. We should do it because we
Love them but some parents just want control.

Governments can and will do the same thing but they can be far more arbitrary and oftentimes not because they love us.

Freedom is the same as it always was. Free to stay off Facebook, Twitter, TV, politics, etc.. and just go about your life.

Do all that and you won't notice that the water around you is getting warmer.

Freedom today isn’t the same as it was in 1750. In 1750 folks came to the 13 colonies so that they could practice their type of religion without being persecuted. More importantly they could actually buy and own land, and own a business. The real Freedom came with the Couer d Bois and the Mountain men. They were truly free. Today we are chained down by responsibilities from jobs and bills. I knew a guy in college who got his degree in engineering. Rather than getting a job he became a homeless guy. I saw him walking one day near the mall and I stopped to talk with him. He told me he chose that lifestyle because he did not want the responsibilities of modern civilization.

Sad but true.

You can still get doxxed even if you aren't on Social Media. Your employer and your childrens' school can be forced to drop you because of social media pressure, even if you don't participate.

Freedom is whatever you will consent to the government. That simple.

Example: Constitution says right to bear arms "shall not" be infringed. But if a rogue government doesn't care about that, who stops them? Thats up to the people to determine what they are willing to consent.
