Did he have a bad leg? Would that have played a factor into anything?
I took it as he wasn’t the killer bc in the beginning I don’t remember that guy with a limp.

Leto did call the police and reported there was an officer down right?
I thought Leto did that bc he knew police would arrive on the scene and catch Denzel there in the middle of an illegal search. Which would have put a damper on building a case. But Denzel climbed a roof and went unnoticed.
I liked the movie. Maybe it’s because of lack of options and at least this is a new idea and not a remake or comic book movie. Hasn’t this place been begging for a new idea?

Yeah once Leto noticed that Malek wasn’t showing up, he figured out they were just trying to get into his apartment so he called the cops so they would be caught illegally searching his house
What I didn’t understand is why Malek didn’t just go to the bar where he said he would to keep him occupied. Instead he just watched from the car from a block away, I can’t think of a more useless position they could’ve picked for him to be as lookout than there

Right. And somehow he made his position even more useless by leaving

A new idea doesn't always make for a good idea. Battleship Earth was a new idea but a very bad movie.

What exactly is new about this idea? The characters, plot direction, and everything else have been done a thousand times with far better execution
I’m all for original movies getting made instead of tent poles and IP, but dusting off a script from 1990 isn’t really a huge improvement

I was also surprisingly disappointed in my man Denzel. I didn't think he was good in it.
I feel like he's been sleep-walking through his movies since the Equalizer. I didn't see what the fuss was for the first one (kind of a poor-man's Taxi Driver crossed with Man on Fire), and the second one was totally mailed-in.
He just doesn't really seem to care that much anymore. Maybe it started with Flight...just a strange kind of role and movie, really.

You thought Fences and Roman J Israel were sleepwalk roles?

Now what that all amounts to, though, is a lot of "little things" but no smoking gun. Now Malek can't accept that. He needs to find the body, the barrette, anything, because he can't live with himself if there's even the possibility that he killed an innocent man. So Denzel helps him out by giving him his irrefutable evidence, so that Malek can sleep well at night and look his kids in the eye. Denzel sends him the barrette so that Malek's life doesn't fall apart like Denzel's did when he killed an innocent person.
Except if it’s not him then like 3 days later they find another dead body and immediately know they didn’t get the right guy
ETA it’s just annoying how poorly thought out the ending was

Yeah, but imo it was him and Denzel knew it, which is why he helped Malek cover it up
I’m not really disagreeing. Just pointing out the silliness of it. The plot gives you two options basically
1.) Leto did it. In which case the entire “we may have got the wrong guy” mystery thing is completely useless.
2.) someone besides Leto did it. In which case the entire beretta thing is completely dumb because again they would know very soon if the killings continued that they killed an innocent man
Regardless of which one you believe, neither is fun/interesting/a good ending. I think when he wrote it he thought that red hair clip was going to be his “I see dead people” moment and it was really nothing
Atleast have some balls to make one of them the real killer or end the movie showing that the killings have continued and they got the wrong guy.

In the opening scene they show the killers WHITE hands so it’s probably not Denzel. I thought from the trailers that it could be but that was a wash after the opening scene.

Movie was extremely meh. The director tried to be like Fincher, but he is no Fincher.
Just finished and I was gonna post this exact same thing. It tried really hard, but it just didn’t hit the mark

it was impossible for me to get past the in-scene editing. It's incoherent.
I definitely noticed that in the interrogation scene with Leto

Jesus Christ what we just watch?
Opening Scene, Bitch pulls over when shes in a car driving away!!!
Old Cop comes back to town and is welcomed in on other cops/detectives turf? bullshite.
The lead Homicide Detective gets in the car with a "suspected" serial killer????
It's the little things. Ya when the SOB talked about his little "things" his kids, I'd hit him with a shovel too.

This is when I knew all the reviews were correct
She not only pulls over for no apparent reason, she pulls into a completely abandoned building with every light off, then continues to run further away from the car into the frickin dessert where even less people could possible help

Saw this tonight.
What a heaping pile of dumbed down horse shite.
Come on Denzel...you’re better than this.

Watched this last night. The building blocks were there to make a great movie but the writing and direction were so incredibly terrible it's almost laughable. All the stupid plot lines have been mentioned on this thread so I don't have to rehash all of the stupid actions by all of the characters and the incredibly idiotic plot points.
I've worked in product design for the last 24 years. The best design teams have a mixture of right brain thinkers and left brain thinkers. Right brains come up with new creative ideas and left brains think through the problems and feasibility of these new ideas. I get this feeling that Hollywood no longer has enough left brain thinkers to help balance out the right brain thinkers to make a good coherent storyline.

I finally saw this the other night and my only thought was Denzel must have owed somebody a favor because I can't believe he read this script and thought it was a good idea. It seriously sounds like something a 12 year old would write. "Ya harder than Chinese arithmetic!!!"
People are speculating about who was what in this and there isn't an answer, this shite was so poorly written there was probably never a murderer written into it. I think people are trying to convince themselves it's not so bad because it's Denzel and HBO but there are far better crime thrillers on Lifetime than this abortion

The only way the film could salvage itself is if Denzel was the killer.
