What are *your* personal thoughts on Alpha Dog?

I think the movie had a good premise and story line, but something about the production just didn’t land for me.

It could be the fact that they casted the whitest Hollywood B-listers and told them to act like street thugs, which made it completely unconvincing.

Or it could be Cassavetes and his unique approach to film directing.

Something seems off about the movie, and I take it most others feel the same based on the 54% rotten tomatoes score.

Thoughts?

I've always enjoyed it. Foster, Timberlake and Yelchin are really good. The true story is just awful.

The guy's in real life were not scary looking either. They were a bunch of wimpy looking dudes.

Ben Foster has been great in every movie he has been in. Very underrated actor to me.

I thought that was how they really were. Bunch of upper middle class kids dealing.

I liked it.

That’s exactly what makes it a spot on portrayal.

Every time I watch I can’t help but laugh at the comical amount of times they say “frick”.

Casting was actually great if you’ve researched the real story. It was a bunch of suburban wanna be thug white kids. The movie really captivated me and I did a lot of research on the real story. Movie is about as accurate as it could be.

The Rugge kid (Timberlake) recently got out of prison a couple of years ago. I think the only ones still in are the shooter and Hollywood (Truelove). The later still has some appeals out there. I’m still shocked he got convicted and life. Many argue it’s because the movie came out before his trial. There is really zero hard evidence against him.

Same here. I thought the movie was phenomenal and watch it every now and then but it's hard to watch sometimes because I think they did a good job of sticking to the events and it feels too real sometimes.

Foster is one of the best actors out there that seems to only get low budget roles. The real question here is:

Who did it better. Ben Foster in Alpha Dog or Ed Norton in American History X? Tough to answer

Exactly.
Movie made me very, very uncomfortable, but if you value truth in story telling, it doesnt get much closer than this. I would theorize that the folks who rate it poorly didnt grow up around plenty of white trash thug wannabes like them and dont believe people like that actually exist out there.
