Why the possibilities after Neilson may be taking time

With it being obvious that O thought he had his man in Neilson, and was willing to wait until the Saints playoff run ended. It’s now apparent that there wasn’t a quick plan B in case Neilson didn’t work out.
With that in mind, and with 13 days before NSD, could they be taking a different approach? There is still a vast pool of qualified candidates including the usual suspects of young up and comers:
Schumann
Reeves
Golding, etc.
But they also have a pool of some of the most experienced and successful NFL DC’s that’s ever coached:
Romeo Crennel
Wade Phillips
Dom Capers
Marvin Lewis, etc. (just to name a few)
We should be able to rest assured that there will not be another Pellini (shot in the dark) type hire coming, but a safer, and hopefully more of a “sure thing” DC hire that can come in and quickly, not only stabilize, but light a fire and bring back the swagger that we’re used to seeing on that side of the ball.
This go around, hopefully they’re having conversations with candidates, but keeping everything strictly to the vest, hence no leaks about who’s coming in next. This may be the best way for them to play it. What if yet another big speculation leak gets out, and again another one doesn’t materialize? That could truly be disastrous in the building of a radioactive situation narrative. I still have faith a solid hire is in the works, because it’s just too good of a job to pass up for most. And though time may be running out in the 4th, they must get this hire right, because O knows his job security is likely attached to it.

Dom Capers is 70 years old. Wade Phillips is 73. O better not be going after those guys.

But they’re really good at what they do, and bring stability. Several have built defenses so good, they’ve taken their teams to multiple SB’s, and recently.
They can have the young position coaches all around them, but have one of these guys as architect. Just a thought, and btw, nearly every NFL team without a solid coordinator would hire one of these guys in a heartbeat.

O has several sure 1st rounders on defense; he needs to target whoever can fix quickly or he’s not long for the job.

Also that second list is a bunch of NFL lifers who haven't coached in college since the 80s.

Ed obviously thought that Pellini was the safer, more of a "sure thing" hire, rather than a young guy, who was untested. He wasn't ready to have to replace Dave Aranda last year, so he went with the name he thought would be solid and with a high floor. So this part of the post doesn't make sense to me.
The only thing you can rest assured is that Ed will try and hire a young guy, because the last round he hired two old guys and it blew up in his face.
The staff is playing checkers, not chess.

None of the interviews O has done so far fits your criteria. All the interviews have been the opposite of O going into a comfort zone. He's targeting potential not proven longer term DCs but rather younger guys who have way more potential for innovation and recruiting. The guys you listed are dinosaurs and none of them are coming to LSU anyway.
He may still be looking at NFL teams right now that are playing in the playoffs. Could be someone on Bucs staff or Buffalo. Who knows.

Checks all the boxes and has more experience calling defenses all 3 of the above mentioned and is still a young guy.
In that mold/model, there is a whole bunch of names. But we should be very very picky.

I don’t think a seasoned NFL vet DC is the answer to who is the absolute best hire. I’m just suggesting that with this field of current candidates, what may be taking some time. The only reason at all that they could look that direction, is the amount of very notable and now available DC’s that not only have schemed against NFL spreads/RPO offenses, they played against them in practice each day.
I don’t think they’ll go that route, I hope they grab the best choice from the college guys, but the field is large and they surprise us.
