How is revoking the permit for the Keystone Pipeline Expansion good for the environment?

To all the new lefties on the board, can you explain to me how revoking the permit for the Keystone Pipeline Expansion is actually good for the environment? We went from a method of transport which needs only electrically driven booster pumps where necessary to a method of transport that uses hundreds of "dirty" railcars or semi trucks? I thought electrical power was the gold standard in clean energy? I'll hang up and listen...

Unfortunately it's not about sound logic or reason. The leftist agenda is all about hurting the oil industry. The oil industry is one of the last bastions of mostly free capitalism with limited government interference and they want control. The industry has plenty of issues, many self inflicted, but a baseless decision like shutting down this pipeline will be a net negative to lots of parties. While it will hurt the environment more to ship with rail or trucks Mr. Buffett donates a lot of money to democratic politicians and his railroad investments stand to benefit handsomely.

I guess while we are on the topic of electricity being the "gold standard" for clean energy, can any of the leftists explain that one to me as well? They do realize that you have to burn fossil fuels in order to create it, right? You dont just plug into the wall and it's there....Oh, and lets just completely disregard the fact that the transfer of one form of energy (fossil fuels) to another (electricity) is riddled with physical inefficiencies....

The barrels that would have been on KXL will like the OP said be transferred by rail or truck to the US OR will be put on the Transmountain pipeline to Vancouver. Those barrels will then be shipped to likely Chinese refineries which aren't near as environmentally friendly as US refineries. US Gulf Coast refineries that would be buying heavy Canadian crude will have to buy heavy barrels elsewhere...likely from Venezuela, Saudi, or Iraq.
Overall KXL cancellation just makes gasoline/diesel more expensive for the average American.
