Is 45 acp still a viable option compared to 9mm? I've been reading that advances in ammo make the 9mm more powerful than ever.

Not sure about .45 but a lot of law enforcement agencies are going back to 9mm from .40.

Nothing wrong with either.

9mm has improved over the years and quite impressive

However. Some platforms in 45 carry comparable rounds as to the 9mm. S&W shield for example.

So the answer is to buy both

.45 is still a good cartridge. But I prefer 9mm for defense due to the higher capacity and less recoil.

I like your thinking.
I went on a 45 acp 1911 tear last year before covid hit hard. Not sure why, but glad I did. I also bought several police turn in 9mm service weapons. Some holster rash away from being almost brand new.

Some have just held on to 45acp because its what they know. I carry a small frame single stack 9mm for ankle or pocket carry but my workhorse is a .40. I can shoot it better than any pistol Ive ever shot so I stick with it. Maybe one day I’ll move to full frame 9mm but for now I like it with 180 grain freedom seeds

The best gun and round is the one you shoot best. 9 mm, .40 and .45 are all good choices with modern JHP bullets.

advances in ammo

Apply to the .45 as well.

9mm is pretty widely considered to be the sweet spot for effectiveness vs capacity vs recoil. There are no flies on the .45 though. Some people just like having a big hole in the barrel.

10mm buffalo bore.

Why?

Because a .500 Smith doesn't fit in my pants.

I wouldn’t mind adding a .40 to my collection mostly due the the popularity dwindling and possible ability to get ammo easier

After having worked in the ER a few years, very few survive a hit from a 45.

It leaves a big hole

I hate the "improvement in ammo" conversation. It applies to ever caliber.

.45 was effective with shitty ammo. 9mm was shitty with shitty ammo. The same advances in technology apply to every caliber that has factory ammo available.

.45 is going to be around forever. The universal rule of handguns is that they all suck.

It's a good question.

I have both. The high dollar defense rounds from buffalo bore make the 9mm perform amazing and you get more rounds with less recoil.

When it comes to ball ammo I feel the .45 is superior and you can buy ball ammo much cheaper and with the xd's I can carry 15 rounds. Enough in a magazine and rounds are cheaper and easier to find vs defense ammo. 45 wins here for me.

Get both

A guy I worked with always argued that a 9mm didn’t have enough stopping power.
He never took me up on my offer to prove him wrong.
