If you like big bore, there is nothing like shooting a .45 ACP. But, bullet advances towards optimal terminal performance have rendered differences in the 3 main semi pistol chamberings essentially moot. 9mm has the advantage of high capacity. .40 being the old compromise is probably the odd cartridge out. Always being the middle child and a cut down 10mm (itself always on the outside looking in, despite its many, many fans), .40 is probably too snappy compared to either .45 or 9mm.

Keeping in mind that a handgun is ALWAYS a compromise. Better than "no gun", always a tool to give you the option to fight your way to a real gun, i.e. a rifle, carbine or shotgun.

Thats my favorite auto pistol caliber. I hate how all the good ammo is watered down though. It should all be ~1425fps as originally designed but instead it barely outruns hot 9mm. You have to buy high dollar boutique ammo to get the original performance. The ballistics really don't justify the reduced capacity anymore.

You do realize the .40 was made from the 10mm because female FBI agents couldn't handle the recoil of the 10mm

.357 is a weird and wonderful round. Most pistol calibers are designed for short barrels; makes sense, because you want all the powder burned for max efficiency. They can typically gain velocity from longer barrel length, but nothing like the .357. In a carbine it starts getting comparable to 30-30.

They may handle it better than 10mm but that doesn't mean they handle it well. 9mm is more manageable and I've seen very few women that handle 9mm well.

My 16 year old daughter does fine with a 9mm.

It isn't the ammo, it's the gun if someone is having issue with that caliber.

ETA: I have a couple of small 9mm that are hard to make follow up shots.

Heck, I have a Ruger LCP in .380 that it would be almost impossible to do so.

Yea itll burn arse out of a rifle barrel. Same thing goes for the other "revolver" calibers that have big cases of slow powder. Its pretty widely considered to be as good as you can do with a handgun far as effectiveness goes. I had a short barreled .357 once and shooting full power 125gr out of it was like having a flashbang go off in your hands.

I have a 2.5" stainless Model 66 I bought new in the early 90s that I'll never get rid of, but it's loaded with Buffalo Bore short barrel ammo. You lose a little velocity but it won't blind you.

I like my LCP when pocket carry is needed, but it's definitely a "get the hell off me" gun. You ain't picking someone off behind a car across the parking lot, or at least I'm not. Miculek might, I guess.

She's probably had some quality training. My wife handles 9mm just fine even out of my shield or P365. We both dislike my LCP2. Given my experience at public ranges, your daughter and my wife are in the minority.

Sure but maybe the larger caliber provides more margin of error in that crazy circumstance when shot placement isn’t perfect

Best answer to the argument.

The biggest problem I personally had with the 10mm was the SW 1096? Handgun. It was a pos and I can't see anyone wanting to carry that thing around being it was boat anchor heavy. Was terribly inaccurate even sand bagged. If I try another 10 it will be a Glock

The Glock is probably the best option for a 10 mm. The gen 5 models aren't out yet but I wonder if they'll keep the 20sf.
