I put bird netting over my strawberries yesterday. They had left them alone for a long time, but they finally found them.
Going to put netting over my blackberries this week also.

I have a cat, so I guess netting is really the only option

I have to net everything. All of my blueberries are in netted enclosures. Have 2 peach trees I need to net, a persimmon tree, a loquat tree, and a fig tree. I am not going to net the blackberries. Nothing messed with them last year (fingers crossed).
Also, my entire garden is in netted enclosures.

I have a fig tree that I make it a point to get out before dawn to pick the figs before the birds get cranked up. The bastards will pick a hole in a fig, eat just a bit and move on to other figs. Before long, they destroy more figs than I pick

Those birds are some SOB’s, that’s for sure.
Netting already working for the strawberries. I just picked 3 ripe ones without hole pecked in them.

Local Lowe's had some 6ft bamboo stakes in stock . Bought a few years worth just in case.

Same here, but now with all this water I have slugs boring holes straight through them. Did not see that coming.

I’ve been picking squash, zucchini, and cucumbers over the past week or so. The zephyr squash look really cool once they get to be full sized. One of my pepper plants randomly started wilting yesterday. Not sure what the deal could be. Looks fine other than wilt on one of the satellite branches. I clipped all the fruits off of it and clipped the bad branch. I may lose it but thankfully there are plenty more.

how do you keep birds off your berries?
For whatever reason, birds have never been an issue. No outside cats or anything, just never had birds go after my blueberries. Only problem I really have is the damn squirrels digging up my beds. Little furry bastards.

Because when you are trying to grow a garden, it is always something.

That's my problem. Pick 15 strawberries throw 8 in the compost from slugs.

Aphids have infested some of my peppers. We haven’t had measurable rain in 3 weeks. That coincides with when I put fertilizer out. Potatoes are flowering though. Should get a good rain on Friday. Fingers crossed for a nice steady soaking.

I've been reading that book Epic Tomatoes, wondering if anyone has a decent amount of experience growing heirloom vs hybrid, the only heirlooms I've grown are cherokee chocalote / purple, I'd say they were less productive than the hybrid varieties, but they produced larger and tastier fruits, didn't really notice any issue with diseases, but this is just 1 variety and wondering if anyone has more experience.

I mostly grow both regular and dwarf heirlooms and hybrids. Right now I have 6 dwarf heirlooms, 6 indeterminate heirlooms, and two hybrids excluding cherries. I have been pretty consistent with those numbers over the last couple of years. I don't find much production difference between the hybrids and the heirlooms. The hybrids are more reliable but I will say the dwarf varieties that I grow (Fred's Tie Dye and New Big Dwarf) are super disease resistant compared to the indeterminate heirlooms I grow.
I pretty much quit on tomatoes towards the end of June just because it gets so hot. I don't have much problem keeping them alive until then.
