U.S. coal-fired power plants closing fast despite Trump's pledge of support for industry
quote:

(Reuters) - U.S. coal-fired power plants shut down at the second-fastest pace on record in 2019, despite President Donald Trump’s efforts to prop up the industry, according to data from the federal government and Thomson Reuters.

Power companies retired or converted roughly 15,100 megawatts (MW) of coal-fired electricity generation, enough to power about 15 million homes, according to the data, which included preliminary statistics from the Energy Information Administration and Reuters reporting.

That was second only to the record 19,300 MW shut in 2015 during President Barack Obama’s administration.

According to Reuters, the coal-power industry in the United States has seen its second-fastest decline in 2019, just behind the 2015 decline. While President Donald Trump has certainly made the effort into saving the coal industry by cutting regulation and calling for subsidies, the competition is too great.

Alternatives like natural gas and solar have become quite competitive and the technology for these energy sources is fast developing while coal stagnates. In the end, the free market has no interest in coal.

Link to solar being competitive for us. I’d like to read info about that.

Coal is not cost-effective, anymore. It's dead. Natural Gas is much cheaper to extract and much cheaper to burn and is what killed it, as far as America goes.

Meanwhile, Chinese coal plants increased output.

Where does solar power rank? More or less expensive than coal?

The plant i worked at was burning coal when Obama came in. When coal got on the shite list, the plant switched to nat gas only. All contracts with coal ended.

They did not revert back when coal was friendly again. Its hard to get a that toothpaste back in the tube.

and that is bad, for them... but they will move past it as they implement solar increasingly... the threat is that they pass us up so far in solar that we can't compete.

GM just changed its marketing, logo and focus onto electric vehicles. Change can't be stopped at a certain point... and we're past that point.

That's alright, Joe is about to open that China market back up and we'll be shipping tonnes of American coal to the far east.

That toothpaste was being kept in the tube through forces other than what was really the market... it was a dishonest campaign to keep using coal, made possible by industry pressure, lobbying, subsidies...

It has NOTHING to do with solar. Everything to do with natural gas. Natural gas is simply cheap and has been very cheap because of, wait for it...Trump's policies: permitting and deregulation.

How many solar panels does it take to equal the production of 1 nuclear reactor?

You're right... in the US it is natural gas. This article is addressing the entire planet, and solar and wind are big factors elsewhere.

So tell us what happens when Joe bans fracking.

Where are you going to get all of your cheap natural gas?

I would rather live next door to a field full of solar panels than a nuclear power plant, personally... how about you?

You know what they call a solar or wind energy spill?
