Waste
Posted on 1/6/21 at 11:46 am to Tactical1
It is a waste of money, I don't like to think about that, but I enjoy the hell out of it.
I just recently finally finished my new build for my index with a 3090 and a 5900x. I have full body tracking and play VR a shite ton. Hell I get drunk and watch movies most weekends with my friends in VRChat. This has been a blessing during the lockdown for my mental stability to be able to socialize and feel like I was socializing as opposed to Zoom calls and shite. Was waiting to play flight sim VR til I finished my build and flight sim still wins this battle lol. The commercial jets destroy my computer. The regular prop planes fly great though. Really is an amazing experience.
VR overall is still pretty much a fad for every day users. It's starting to prove it's worth to enthusiasts like me. Half Life Alyx was one of the best games ever made and really represents where this tech can go.

VR is an absolute must for sims (flight and racing especially) and kind of fun but borderline not worth it right now for any others genres.

Depends on the game. I've had a hell of a fun time playing Robo Recall, Gorn, etc. But it's not a system I would sink hours at a time in to playing.
My biggest issue is that Oculus now requires all new hardware to have a facebook account. And starting in 2023, ALL oculus hardware will require it.
Zuck's acolytes decide your post goes against "community standards"? You're not only given a 30 day timeout from facebook, but you also can't access your oculus system or games for 30 days. Which is utter bullshite. If you get permabanned for speaking out against facebookthink? Your hardware is now a brick.
this is the only thing keeping me from getting the quest 2.

I'm on a 30 day ban for posting a meme that changed "Proud Boys" to "Poor Boys" making fun of Biden's comment a while back. Facebook said it was racist. If I had a Quest 2, I'd be unable to use the system for 30 days as well. Because of an algorithm and they refuse to review. When I first got the ban, I clicked on "request review" and within 30 seconds I got a response saying "We've reviewed your post and it still goes against community standards." Which shows that their "review" process is utter horseshite.

Quest 2 has been hacked to remove facebook requirement if you really want it and do not want to use facebook logins.
I've thought about getting one just so I can play wireless with wifi6, but apparently that isn't working well yet.

Any other decent VR headsets in a similar price range? Vive and Index are significantly more expensive. I’d rather not give money to Zuckerberg

Can’t imagine Facebook won’t fix that

I get that VR gaming isn't for everyone, but I also don't think it's a fad that's going to just fizzle out like it did back in the late 90's. If you can get over the occasional motion sickness (start slow and carefully pick what games you play) it's worth it. The sense of scale and depth in VR is the thing that can't be conveyed without just experiencing it for yourself.
I've had PSVR for a couple of years and just received a Quest 2 for Christmas. Those are really the only 2 VR headsets worth getting in the $300 price range. If you have a decent gaming PC, I'd get the Quest 2 at this point since you can play games off of it with a link cable or wirelessly (with a little bit of setup). The tracking and clarity of the Quest 2 display is significantly better than the PSVR as are the controllers, and I'm able to play it for much longer without any eye strain.
I don't really use my Facebook account, so I don't care that I need to link it to the Quest 2, though I can understand why that bothers people. You also don't need a wifi 6 router to be able to stream games wirelessly to the Quest 2. I'm using my router's 5 GHz band with my PC hardwired to my network and can play PC titles just fine. There is some compression of the image happening, but nothing I notice unless I'm truly looking for it. Playing HL: Alyx without getting wrapped up in a cable is pretty awesome.

Cable Hangers, anyone still getting wrapped up in a cable isn't a heavy user.

I do notice it, but I am not a light user. Also, I already have wifi6. I want it working well prior to me purchasing the device. I still mess around with my vive wireless.

Has anyone played some Project Cars or F1 in VR? That has me most intrigued

I will say, if you find a game you enjoy AND have the space for the setup, it can be a good way to have a fun kind of workout. Depends on the game of course, but if you have trouble finding motivation to be active it can be a good way to do so. Something like beat saber keeps you moving a lot.

I don't know that I buy their conclusion that it's equal to playing a game of tennis, but I've consistently worked up a sweat playing on hard and expert once I worked my way up to those difficulty levels.

Robo Recall is also good for this.

Oh, you know they will.
Once Valve comes out with their own wireless system at a competitive that doesn't require a social media account though... FB might have to change their tune (not everyone can lock a market like Apple can).

Don’t think I wanna spend another $1k just for a VR setup. Already spent $1800 on a PC last year.
Is Oculus any good?
SteamVR is a great setup

My little brother got one for Christmas. He loved it for about 3 days and now he’s bored with it. It’ll collect dust from here on out.

My youngest has figured out a way to play his Oculus Quest II with Roblox and spent nearly the entire night on it. Well worth the purchase price imo.

Soon they will be in VRChat as just an egg for them to crack and become trans.
