Kinda intrigued with the idea after seeing Star Wars: Squadrons. Is VR really a fun way to play games or a gimmick that gets old quick or not really all that fun? Is it better on PC or Playstation VR?

I would say try it before you buy it if you can.

It makes many people physically uncomfortable to varying degrees, myself included. Even playing for a few minutes ruins my head, so it's basically a non starter for me.

I also don't know of anyone who plays VR games for hours at a time. It's got the same problem motion control games had to a degree. It's still much more a gimmick than serious gaming IMO but some people find it extremely cool. I think people do VR games more for the new experience than the games themselves being more fun.

It's pretty cool but I could only manage about a half an hour before I started to get nauseous.

they have some really great VR titles right now that make you go

Half Life Alyx is the killer app right now
RE7 is amazing
Beat Saber
Blood & Truth
Astrobot Rescue Mission
Walking Dead Saints & Sinners
Boneworks
Sairento
Phasmophobia
Skyrim VR
Borderlands 2 VR

Some games are gimmicks, others are very amazing. PC will allow you to use far more powerful VR setups, but they're pricy. Index will run you $1k

I have PSVR and the Valve Index (best one). Haven't hooked up the Index yet, but I just bought a shitload of PC VR games so I'm gonna run it soon

Don’t think I wanna spend another $1k just for a VR setup. Already spent $1800 on a PC last year.

Is Oculus any good?

Know of any stores around NOLA/northshore that have a demo setup so I can try it out before buying?

I loaned out my PSVR setup to 6 or 7 people on here a couple years ago, maybe someone here is local to you that can let you give it a whirl

Picked up the Oculus Quest II for my youngest for Xmas. He plays it for hours and says that it is better than the PSVR. Ordered the Oculus Link and will be trying that out when I get back home from vacation.

I got a quest 2 for Christmas. My Brother in law has had a quest since last Christmas.

It’s fun. But no where near playing top tier games on console or PC.

Like I played 4 on 4 capture the flag paintball last night for a couple hours. Had my laying on the ground shooting a sniper so it was more stable and everything. It’s truly insane what it can do.

But I do think there is a gimmick factor to it. It’s hard to tell. I personally don’t get sick in it at all. I can be logged in for hours straight and it doesn’t bother me. So that just depends on the person.

I'll say it every time I see this mentioned.. this was one of, if not the best, gaming experience I've ever had. It lightens up once you get weapons like the shotgun and flame thrower but those first few hours were so damn scary.

I've let a few people play the first hour or so and they always NOPE out the first time you're fighting that girl and you have to go down in the basement.

I would say that this is spot on. I can only play for an hour max, and then usually need to sit down for a bit after. I don't typically get nauseous easily either.

You can play using the power of your PC, and get 90FPS on games. Look up virtual desktop, and the PC streamer. There is a whole tutorial. I connect over WiFi with a WiFi6 connection. I now only buy games on Steam, and use this method of connecting. It doesn't use any of the storage on your Oculus as well.

I get pretty nauseous within a very short period of time. Not a big fan of anything VR or 3D.

I read a lot about this before buying my PSVR last year. I started slow , only playing about an hour or so each time. By the end of the first week I was fine. I kept the snap turning on for games where you're walking and that definitely helped.

I'm not sure if everyone is capable of adjusting but it worked for me. You can also do little things like having a fan blow on you or taking Dramamine. Apparently ginger works well for that too but I never tried it.

I'm fascinated to see where VR goes. It's obviously still pretty new but I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon. After seeing how well Resident Evil translated it feels like it's perfect for the horror genre. I'm curious to see if it's ever going to be incorporated into schooling. Instead of learning about the Sistine chapel from a book you can throw on one of those cheap phone VR devices and boom, you're there.

I think VR is the next logical step in gaming, but it's going to be held back until they can figure out a way to immerse you in the game without wearing a fat arse headset.

I enjoyed it, but I currently wouldn't drop 300 plus on the technology.

What games does he play and did he mention what made him prefer the Oculus over the PSVR?

I've had the Rift S for about a year and a half know a few others that have it as well and know others that have gotten the Quest 2. All of us enjoy them immensely.

I go through phases with mine but there are a few reasons:

1. My play space in my office is too small and it's a bit of a hassle to move my setup outside or to a room where I can move furniture to make a bigger space.

2. My primary game (DCUO) doesn't work through it (even through a desktop emulator), something about certain movements does not transfer through remote connections (same if I VNC from another computer on my LAN or RDP in from work).

3. Age is catching up to me so I am have a strange pressure/migraine thing going on (I take meds for now) but there's also a dizziness component that lurks in the background. The occasional screen-freeze when a game is loading (usually on a company logo) fricks my world up for a few minutes after.

I can work around 2 and 3 well enough but 1 is just enough of a PITA to make my VR gaming happen in only fits and spurts. Still, when I do it I enjoy the hell out of it. I've said this before and I'll say it again: VR is the next stage of gaming (VR or Blended Reality like the Holo Lens) and we're just beginning to scratch the very surface of it.

Right now he is only playing Beat Saber, we have it for PSVR as well and the fact that it is standalone makes a world of difference. I am 6'5" and he is maybe 4' right now makes it a nightmare when we try to play Beat Saber at the same time on the PSVR.

Depends on the game. I've had a hell of a fun time playing Robo Recall, Gorn, etc. But it's not a system I would sink hours at a time in to playing.

My biggest issue is that Oculus now requires all new hardware to have a facebook account. And starting in 2023, ALL oculus hardware will require it.

Zuck's acolytes decide your post goes against "community standards"? You're not only given a 30 day timeout from facebook, but you also can't access your oculus system or games for 30 days. Which is utter bullshite. If you get permabanned for speaking out against facebookthink? Your hardware is now a brick.

If you have money to burn and a strong stomach, it is more than worth it.

It takes time to get used to the motion sickness. If you push through it, usually you are good to go after a few days. But... I've been fine in some games and couldn't push through others. Having said that, I always hated spinning rides at the amusement parks.

Main problem is that AAA studios haven't embraced it. Resident Evil 7 was great but never released in VR for the PC. I haven't seen confirmation of RE8 in VR which would be a huge negative for VR growth.

Half Life Alex had rave reviews.

VR is made for Horror. I'm surprised they aren't churning out horror games non stop.

In summary, if you have money to burn, get it. If you are on a tight budget no...it will end up gathering dust in the long periods between top tier games with VR.

I'm old and the most unique and horrifying experience in my lifetime of gaming was playing RE7.
