I've made 2 attempts neither turned out too great. The first was at age 40 and ended in a knee injury after 170 miles. The second attempt was when I retired at age 68, I took my dog Spider along. That one lasted all of 2 days. Imagine a South Florida boy (old man) and his dog snowed in on top of a mountain. That broke my spirit.

Lol, question how many people have died on the AT?

According to the Googles, 11 people have been murdered on the Appalachian Trail. I didn't find eaten by bear statistics so it has to be in the thousands.

Can always flip flop. Hiked it in 2009 and till this day it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Hope to again when I retire.

I love this stigma. So many people think it’s drunks, lazy losers, etc. When you are hiking long miles and constantly going up and down mountains the last thing you want to do is get drunk or do hard drugs. Sure people drink in town, some smoke weed on the trail (not I), but it’s amazing the number of executives, engineers, lawyers, nurses, ex-military, etc. It truly is a family out there.

Someone asked about deaths. If you draw a 2180 mile line anywhere across the Country you would be hard pressed to find a safer one than the A.T. Just don’t camp near roads and if someone shows up you get a weird feeling about then just hike on a few more miles.

PCT > AT

I know a guy who has hiked all 3 the AT the PCT and the CDT. He says to him the AT was the toughest. Shortest distance of the 3 but they learned a lot after blazing the AT. It has steeper climbs because they cut the trails more direct. When they cut the trails for the PCT they used switchbacks.

Pct is graded for pack animals, CDT still has a lot of road miles. A.T. Is getting more switchbacks every year, but you don’t have as many long stretches without water. Whiteblaze.net is a great forum if any of you are considering hiking it.

Ive hiked the Georgia section several times, never felt unsafe. Been there in the busy season(march to may) and the dead. Ive had plenty of bear encounters, but never felt too concerned. My concern for someone going out, is they were ill prepared for the trail(Water, food, warmth in the cold)

Blue Velvet had a pretty awesome write up on the OB a long time ago for his through hike.

I always regret not doing immediately after college. I guess I'll have to wait till retirement now.

The PCT is also on my list.

That’s an odd trade.

Maybe he's married & giving up 5 yrs of sex means giving up little or nothing.

Savvy!

Lifelong dream of mine. The best I can hope for is just section hiking it over many years. I don't see how I would ever be able to do a thru-hike.

If you look up Homemade Wanderlust on YouTube, she has really good vlogs on her thru hikes of the AT, CDT, and PCT.

Guy I know just solo hiked it. Said it was the most peaceful thing he’s ever done, but needed 6 months to adjust back to the world again. He was pretty miserable to be around at that time
