The only thing worse than this sort of "Dr." title are the people who get honorary doctorates (or even just honorary degrees) and then act like they're somehow knowledgeable.

1. Disagree with Epstein to your heart's content. But after reading your posts, you have zero business criticizing his writing ability or logic. He's one of the better-selling serious critics and essayists of his generation. He also edited The American Scholar for decades before retiring. So, fortunately, the political backlash against this opinion piece will not hurt him any more than previous controversies have. That's the price of being a provocative social critic.
2. You haven't been paying attention if you are unaware of the recent crises in peer review and general devaluing of higher degrees.
3. Epstein's book, "Snobbery: The American Version," is one of my favorite nonfiction reads ever, and I think a lot of OT'ers would enjoy it. His derision of honorifics is consistent with his past writings; he's only being blasted now because of the partisan affiliation of his target this week.
4. It is legitimately important to highlight the true nature of "Doctor Jill's" professional certification when the American political media has intentionally blurred the distinction in the context of covid policy debates.

If we are going to call doctorates of Education “Dr.” then we should do the same with lawyers. They earn a doctorate in a much more difficult field.

Baw I am not putting opinions anywhere near the realm of fact/logic. You are trying to correlate opinions (formed perceptions based on a multitude of sources and completely lacking in ability for scientific proof, i.e, "John thinks this," but how do we prove that John indeed thinks that? Can he be "proven wrong" for thinking this?) and something like a "provable fact" (which is determined through specific controlled and/or scientific-based analysis, i.e., "John lived in Baton Rouge while he worked toward his doctorate degree"). As far as logical fallacy, wouldn't you say the MSM is guilty of equivocation, or how about these false attribution's you're throwing at me clearly based on your own empirical observations. While, you are entitled to such opinions, clearly formed from such aforementioned observation, and I might even find some interesting or agreeable, don't try to bombard us with claims of fallacy, when all of your circular language is premised upon "im getting a masters, I'm involved, so I know more than this author." Which is a fallacy in of itself.

He writes like a retarded Gore Vidal. He isn't all that important of a social critic, honestly. He has had remarkably little influence in the non-fiction world. The best American essayists are John McPhee, John D'Agata, John Jeremiah Sullivan, Susan Sontag, Gore Vidal and Charles D'Ambrosio, among many others I could name. Epstein has had remarkably little fanfare. No major book awards or prizes, nor any prestigious teaching jobs at respected MFA programs. John McPhee, also of his generation, was far more profilic and is by far a better sentence level writer than Epstein. I've been around nonfiction circles since 2004, and I've literally never heard anyone mention him. But if you like him, more power to you.

There is a replication crisis, and I'm well aware of it. My work deals specifically with it, because I'm trying to integrate multiple fields. Again, Epstein didn't make this point. He pointed to a relaxation of standards, which I disputed. If you have to make arguments on his behalf for things he didn't say, then I don’t know what to tell you. If you want to agree with Epstein that there is a lack of prestige in doctorate level work, be my guest, but at least have some rigor to the argument. He'd get a failing grade in an English 101 class given how much he jumped around.

He's also being blasted because it is a terrible piece on a sentence level. It is a wonderful example of what not to do. If I ever teach again, I'll use this essay as an example of what not to do.

No, she has an EdD. And while yes that entitles her to the "Dr." prefix, the issue is that she is being presented as "Dr. Biden" to the public. The only time a PhD or EdD is referred to as "Doctor" is in academic realm. This is causing people to believe she is a medical doctor. And the media damn well knows it.
